Bump-I know some found this offensive, but the visual I got reading it gave me a few chuckles.

Sexual preference is akin to preferring brunettes or blondes. I think you mean sexual orientation.

By all accounts, Michael Sam is a person of extraordinarily high character despite a not-idyllic childhood. Did you read the NYT piece?

Regarding the shower issue, our military has had openly gay servicemembers for quite a while now, and all of our NATO allies, Israel, and others have done so for multiple years. Somehow those delicate straight soldiers have been able to cope.

Seriously, how is this even a thread? Dale Hansen can [deleted] off for eternity. He's one of the primary reasons our football program wandered in the abyss for two decades. He had a personal vendetta for SMU and sought to undermine us and succeeded. Not that we weren't at fault- we were- but he could have just as easily gone after plenty of other schools that were practicing shady recruiting tactics with prospects in the Metroplex.

I don't give a [deleted] what he said about Michael Sam. Frankly, I'm sick of hearing about Michael Sam. He's gay- so what? I don't personally agree with the practice but I do a lot of questionable things so I'm not going to judge him and what he does in his personal life with another consenting adult. If he can beat offensive tackles, get to the QB, and play at a high level then he will have a spot on an NFL roster. If he can't, he won't. This should have been a story for like a day and then we move on with our lives. Dale Hansen is a [deleted] who was just looking to get some publicity off of the current hot topic in sports.

I have a better idea. Keep the left-wing in-our-face agenda off this board and outa my face.

In 2014, it's disappointing to read that some people are proud of being intolerant.

This is about that arrogant [deleted] Dale Hansen and his shotty reporting just regurgitating what Jon Stewart did in a serious matter to get publicity. He probably collaborated with the other hack at channel 8 Brett Ship. Watch this Jon Stewart piece and tell me that isn't true.

I'm not a fan of Dale, but I liked his points anyway. It should not matter to anyone that Michael Sam is gay, but for some asinine reason it does. Doesn't matter to me if Dale was just looking for attention or not. After all, that is kinda his job these days... (I will note that I may not have the deep seated hatred of some of the older fans simply because I was barely alive when the David Stanley thing went down. Still not a fan though.)

Regarding some of the other comments on this thread: embarassing. I don't generally go off-topic but if you think a straight man should have ANY right/freedom that a gay man doesn't, it's really hard to take anything you have to say seriously. That's not political; it's just basic humanity.

Live and let live, people.

EDIT: And I agree maybe Dale owes Jon Stewart some royalties... but the points are accurate no matter who is making them. I doubt Jon Stewart cares even a little.

I don't think anyone is saying that a gay player shouldn't have the right to play in the NFL. I am concerned that some journalists immediately label other as "bigots" when they raise the issue of a distraction in the locker room. Go back and look at what Chris Culliver said last year- it was pretty eye opening/ignorant but are you going to tell me that his viewpoint isn't shared by many other players in the NFL? Same goes for all of the gay slurs in Incognito's texts. You think those aren't thrown around 32 locker rooms in the NFL? The distraction thing is a legitimate point, and raising it does not make someone a bigot, regardless of what Deadspin would have you believe. Perhaps it's sad that it's an issue in 2014, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is an issue.

What's also a legitimate point is that Sam came out to his Mizzou team before the season and it apparently wasn't much of a distraction, since they had a great season. But just because it wasn't a distraction there doesn't mean that will automatically be the case in an NFL locker room. NFL GMs pore through all of these guy's personal/private lives like you wouldn't believe- so of course they're going to take his sexuality into account just like they do any thing out of the ordinary in any other potential draftee's personal life.

The funny thing is the media creates the distraction they pretend doesn't exist. ESPN is the worst. I only tune in for SMU basketball games now, SportsCenter is unwatchable

I don't disagree with any of this. There are a lot of legitimate concerns about his specific situation that NFL teams need to consider. There were some comments by earlier posters that are downright ignorant/bigoted though.

To recap...

Dale Hansen is a [deleted] who deserves zero props
Michael Sam being gay shouldn't be an issue in 2014
The media sucks

Now this is why I do not agree with liberals...it's their way or die

...Nothing personal against you BigT3x.

Can everyone just stop talking about this politically charged topic and others and get back to talk about football/or the lack of football at SMU?

Next thing you're going to want is for a black man to be admitted into the Dallas Country Club. Oh wait...

I really could care less about his (Sam's) sexual orientation or anyone else's for that matter. This story isn't news... is there nothing else going on in the world to report on?
