His PhD thesis was on the decline of the NE as an economic center and the migration of that economic power to the South. It wasn't long after he completed his thesis that he moved to the South and pretty much stayed in the South since.

He was incredibly insightful and he is the reason the Cox School is a national powerhouse.

What was the basis for his theory?

I've not read the thesis itself. I read about it (summary form). He was evaluating the economic factors for success and identified the South as having the factors to encourage economic growth while the NE had factors that discouraged economic growth. I don’t know the details but one can imagine the decline of manufacturing and the growth of service and high tech as potentials.

The man had great fore sight. I certainly can see what's happening. Thanks for the explanation

In scientific terms, a theory has stood up to testing and based on knowledge that has been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation so it could very well be Theory with capital T.

Making sweeping generalizations of a region or state, even arkansas ( ) is ignorant. Arkansas is one of the most physically beautiful places you could ever grow up, with incredible culture. As for Dean Niemi - he occasionally teaches a class titled something like 'the history of business in america' that covers his former thesis, as well as discussions of the growth of major american industries, and current socio-economic issues. Really a cool class, and an easy A if there are any current bschool students reading

Oh don't stop with just Arkyland. I've lived in Tennessee, Texas and Louisiana as well. Please note, I never mentioned anything about the NE area except NE resident and current Dean of the B school wrote his doctorate thesis about the area's economic potential. His work, not mine. Yes, I did mention the butt ugly chicks at the UConn game but then that is a matter of taste. But you know they are ugly if a redneck hick form Arkylnad thinks their ugly even though they had most of their teeth.

My published works include research of a cell wall protein C vaccine against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (nasty little critter) in a cystic fibrosis model as it relates to lung compliance (Chest, 1994). I also won a researcher’s award for that work. Sure, its back woods kinda stuff (disclaimer, I wasn’t in Arkyland at the time). I have a reprint left if you would like me to send it to you. Just let me know.
