If there is ANYTHING June Jones has proven he can do while at SMU it is take a Quarterback and make him productive. JJ McDermitt, Kyle Padron, UT's washout, it doesn't matter, the QB will be turned into a darkhorse NFL candidate.

When was the last time we got a 4* OL to look at us, or a 4* DL, at least one who isn't looking to transfer? That is what worries me, not who is under center.
Disagree- JJ's inability to groom a QB during his tenure here has been perplexing, esp. after what he did with Brennan and Chang at Hawaii. Our teams have only been as successful as the defense during June's time here, and I wouldn't have expected that.
Jones has been in college about 15 years now, and I don't think a single one of his quarterbacks has ever - ever - taken a single snap in an NFL regular season game, unless Rolovich did. Brennan got some preseason time with the Redskins, but that's about it. They must be very, very dark horse candidates.

Regardless- his QBs at Hawaii (Brennan and Chang) put up some exceptional numbers. Not so much the case here

Oh I agree with that; his collegiate QBs (much more at Hawai'i) have been very good/excellent. I was just commenting (through yours) to the statement that Jones takes quarterbacks and turns them into a dark horse NFL candidate. I find that a stretch given the 15 year track record.

QB is the most important position on the team so it's the first thing we need to worry about. June's track record with QBs is highly overrated, you'd think a so-called QB guru would have produced at least 1 NFL starting QB after 15 years on the job. You made a good point about the other positions though, June has rarely put together complete teams during his career which explains why he's won so few championships.

he focuses to heavily on QB, wide receivers, and o-line and ignores the rest of the squad...ie defense

June hard at work eh? I know this is his "standard", but in the context of this thread, I find it hilarious.

What say you ECM, Buddha, and 86? Still think June is hard at work on the recruiting trail?

He's such a joke. How any of you can defend this clown who's robbing our school is unbelievable.

Criticize a lame duck recruiting year. That's fair. Without June Jones we'd be rubbing shoulders with UTSA, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee State, NTSU, and Florida International. And considering very seriously dropping football altogether. There would be no American Athletic Conference to play in, no Larry Brown, no Top 25 in bball.

And let's not forget that SMU has paid JJ nothing, so "our school" is not being robbed.

As frustrating as this year is, I'll take that. Thank you June.

Put the flask away, BOP. When have I said JJ is hard at work on the recruiting trail? I've been pretty PO'd with his recruiting efforts since 2011.

I don't expect him to offer recruits in person that live 1,500 miles away- although the Rivals article says Kearns and June spoke on the phone and Kearns is planning to visit here unofficially with his parents soon. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but the fact a Rivals 250 QB wants to come check out SMU doesn't seem like a bad thing. Again, I think June's general recruiting efforts have been abysmal for 2+ years but I'm not getting bent out of shape over this one.

Agree. We've said this 100 times but it warrants mentioning again- JJ will leave us in a considerably better spot than he found us. I was in diapers the last time SMU played in a bowl before June came to SMU.

And so let's take that next step or two:

1) He's leaving. No amount of [deleted] or whining will change that one way or another. You can't make him stay longer and you can't make him leave sooner.

2) Let's be thankful for what he's done and enjoy it. Yes it's been wierd. Yes it's been unconventional. That's ok and even slightly fun. This school has needed a little shakeup, a little injection of soul in our ironed and buttoned up world.

Why people feel the need to crucify someone, I'll never understand.

Yeah, I'm hammered at work at 9 in the morning. How'd you know?

And when you phrase it like that, sure, that sounds perfectly fair. But when you throw in the fact that the kid had never heard from ANYONE on the staff whatsoever and that he doesn't have any other offers, and in order to talk to June and Odum, the kid had to call June, not the other way around. I just don't see how June can be praised is all.

And yes ponyboy, we'd be in a [deleted] hole if June didn't beat up on some of the crappiest teams in the country to make us more respectable than them. I thank him for trying for 3 years, and we got into the AAC, because there would be no LB otherwise. 100% agree. That doesn't give him any kind of pass. He's still being paid to sort of do a job you know. But we don't hold him accountable so why should he care...

It is the lack of recruiting effort that is frustrating. I understand us not signing 4 star DEs, RBs, OLs, etc. What I do not understand is how we haven't managed to bring in better talent at WR and QB. Granted most would not wabt to go to SMU, but with effort we would have found a few that wanted to showcase their skills and dominate in a ridiculously pass friendly offense.

I don't know- from the Rivals article he sounded pretty excited about the call and talking to June. Also check his Twitter- he was really excited about getting his first offer, as he should be. I'm not saying we'll get him because it's a longshot but a lot of guys always talk about their first offer and how special that was.

Sidenote- not comparing the two as players because I haven't seen Kearns' tape, but Tyler Bray was also from northern CA, highly rated by Rivals (in the 100s IIRC) and only had one big-time offer from Tennessee to go along with Fresno and SDSU- and he was a damn good talent. Had some off-the-field and maturity issues but he was a very talented player, and currently on an NFL roster in KC I believe.

Since JJ thought Kaiser was top NFL talent, I wonder how he will describe this kid... potentially the best QB ever to play the game since middle school? Not knocking JJ but I do find his tendency to over hype quite entertaining.
