Well, we've already got one quasi-national championship that was earned the wrong way. How did that serve us in the long run?

As far as basketball and this possible infraction are concerned, Memphis is still bitter about their run to the Finals being ruled ineligible by the NCAA because of the eligibility issues surrounding Derrick Rose, I believe it was. Go on their boards and see how they feel about it.

It's totally hypothetical - it's possible that Mudiay truly was clean - but if he isn't completely clean, B1G has a point.

Who was it that gave us the quasi-national championship?

We should pull an A&M and claim football National Championships in 1923, 1981, and 1982 in addition to 1935

Well, Bobby Collins said that we were No. 1 in his book, but I doubt that carries much weight anymore. Also, the Helms foundation - whatever that is - had us as No. 1 that year, but others disagree with those two.

Don't see why not. The National Championship foundation had us as the National Champs in 1981. But I've heard that six different sources had six different National Champs that year.

SMU will better off in the long run with what happened on Monday.

Yep - just like when Larry Johnson did not enroll - they will be better off...

Of course the worst case scenario would have been that he was declared ineligible on the eve of March Madness and we limped into the tournament without out point guard after having him all year, or worse, we had to forfeit games he was in and thus ineligible for the tournament.

The smell of his amateurism questions stood out like a sore thumb. Hence, the title of the thread.

This program was saved.

And HoopmanX is saying the same thing I am. He's just saying it differently.

The difference is Larry Brown staying vs Dave Bliss. We won the SWC the next year IIRC. The thing went downhill because of Shumate.

No SMU Sports including Basketball were DOA with the hiring of Pye. Remember Bliss left SMU BECAUSE of Pye-we just had more players in the pipeline in basketball so it didn't show as quickly

I am no Shumate fan - but the players that he recruited were the ones responsible for our last SWC title and NCAA appearance - not Bliss's. Of course '93 was a perfect storm of a bad SWC with no Arky and ripe for the taking. After '93 it went downhill - but that was all AK Pye and the admissions standards catching up with Schumate and his staff.
