Diaz was considered one of the top young defensive minds in the country when he was at Miss State prior to joining Texas. It didn't work out at all w/ UT but then again the Mack Brown assistant coach curse struck a few of his guys (Greg Robinson, Duane Akina, Applewhte, etc.). The straw that broke the camel's back was the BYU game last year.
Look any current DC who is going to take a lateral move to come to SMU is gonna have a few warts. Just thinking of guys that have Texas ties and would be a part of a really good, young staff.

Diaz also was accused of having a soft defense at UT. When Greg Robinson took over as DC it was a lot better when he made the start hitting in practice more. Greg Robinson could be the DC.

I'm guessing that Chad would call plays and (mostly) take care of the offense. That would help make up for Beatty's lack of experience

No. They were weak against everyone.
But, as a Texas-Ex (grad school), I think that facts have shown that UT's problems under Mack were top to bottom.

Todd Graham is a great example of what we are trying to pull together. See the thread about Norvell and all the top young assistant that came through that program. Graham a product of Texas High School football

I don't know too many "stepping stones" paying $2.5MM to their coach. This should be a place for an unproven coach to come in and build a champion (like patterson @ TCU although they are not good now) and stay. If it was a stepping stone job it would be paying in the $500K to $800K range.

My point is that we have the funds and resources to keep a successful coach around to where he wouldn't want to go to a so called "major school".
