Did Mason and JJ get along or was there some tension between the two?

I do not believe they had the same thought process as to how to run the show.

They got a long, Mason liked him, appreciated him and his support. But, like any two guys that have a a lot of experience built over years with different staff's ... you sometimes have different philosophies. Just like my boys ... they love me dearly, but they don't agree with me on everything, nor do they do things always the way I would ........ Of course they are wrong.
I know Mason favored more contact as I said in the spring and early fall camp. If it was his choice, the R&S would not be the offense of choice. Dose not like it as an offense, plus it can put the "D" in disadvantages as we know, esp if you are not efficient at it. . We would see the pistol, and other modern variations an approaches. When it came to staff ... yes Mason was a little frustrated on what some have called JJ's cronyism, and lack of expectations and accountability that followed.
But he liked JJ and they got a long.

http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/09/smus-tom-mason-wants-high-energy-practices-with-contact.html/..Practices will feature quicker but more intense drill sets and more scrimmage type situations.
"I’m going to speed up the tempo of practices," he said. "I want these kids to be out there two hours and feel like they’ve been out there 10 minutes.
"We’ll have the 10-men inside run, which we haven’t done, we’ll have some one-on-one work with the wide receivers and DBs, and we’re going to a have a team blitz period where it’s 10 reps offense versus defense, first versus seconds type stuff where it’s boom, boom. I want the practice to go fast and crisp."

Everyone now included in the Oklahoma drill including the O-Line. I believe this has previously been a defense only drill.
The younger guys, redshirts, and backups will now have their own full speed, tackle to the ground 11 on 11 games. Previously these kids basically got 3/4 speed walk thru's with no hitting against the starters. There are plenty of players on the team that have been here 2 or 3 years that have NEVER been able to play and hit full speed in a live scrimmage situation. I think that was a big philosophical Mason vs. June problem which has just changed.
From what I understand Mason gave his own 'intro to the team, this is how it's gonna be' speech to the team this week and it was met with a standing ovation from the players.
Junes primary cronies (Phillips & Mel) are none too happy about it and it is obvious. Gonna be a lot of tension on the staff the rest of the way but Mason has taken charge.
JasonB's comments above are also part of what I've heard as well.
Getting the younger guys going full speed in 1's vs 2's also allows the staff to evaluate talent a lot better. I wonder how many players on the team who transferred out were really intensity driven guys who couldn't deal with the slower pace. Maybe now we see the Holloways and KCs really stand out and push forward.

If it's about intensity, I cannot imagine Davis won't start.

Cassell will probably start against Aggie due to Davis' injury. Not sure how bad it is.

That's too bad, because in my mind Davis was a huge light in an otherwise very dark Baylor game. Yes, I realized he got dropped behind the line just about every play. But holy smokes what athletic ability and willpower.

All coaches say this stuff. I'll believe it when I see it on the field because that's when I'll know the players believe it.
If we go 0-12 this season but play hard, hit hard and fight, I'll be -- well, not happy -- but less concerned than I am right now.

It's been less than a week and that's already extremely clear.

I took it as they're going to hit in practice, as I thought June outlawed it (at least on offense) during such.

How bad is Davis injured? What if Cassel goes down? Remember the walkon in the UCF game? We would have probably won had Burcham not gone down. Had the ball at midfield, that 4th string guy came in and basically spiked the ball into the ground or lobbed it into a defenders hands. It was the worst passing attempts I had ever seen.

Mason is aware of the criticism of the staff. Looks like he is taking advantage of the opportunity.

I wonder what their pitch is.
