Lile rebstang said, climb the mountain again. I like that. We gotta stop thinking like we're a power in the swc. The entitlement aura worries me as we need a blue collar attitude. Maybe that's the difference between us and tcu.

I just want some football fan in Oak Cliff or Richardson or Plano or Red Oak etc to know how to get to our games if they wish. This was not meant to be a full marketing thread like all the others. I had no idea how to get there and where to tailgate my first time to Ford and I went to school there. Had it not been for the Special Delivery invitation to join them on the Blvd I would still be wandering around.

I personally think there is a large market in Dallas for entertainment in the moderately priced range. The cost and availability of pro tickets is/has become far too expensive for a large segment of the population. The market should be to promote a family atmosphere at a family affordable cost with good value for the entertainment. Much of what Mrydel is saying involves promoting SMU so that the family market is reached and that the affordability and access is reasonable. I am not aware of any real SMU efforts to focus on the family market.

SMU's highest paid attendance season was 50k+ at the Cotton Bowl. The team was 4-6-1 without a high level OOC home opponent (all three OOC were on the road). The success on attendance was Mustang Mania, which was the most marketed program ever at SMU. Russ Potts stated that winning was the roof, but not the house. Winning helps, but an entertaining product properly marketed will succeed.

My opinion as I have said before....
Schedule easier OOC. Win 8-11 games per season for 4-5 yrs in a row. That's the only way you will build a sustainable fan base. Going 7-5 and playing in half-ass bowls is not gonna get it done. All of the other marketing/promotions might help short-term but only winning big will make fans stick.

nacho, Your remark is not that far off. Don't know about the dollar figure but covering the stadium would help pull people away from the comfort of air conditioning, heat and TV in their home or the local sports bar. They could watch a game enjoy the social life and a beer in comfort. After all Texans like Americans every were are getting softer as the decades go buy. We do like our comforts. It would be somewhat self promoting.
A roll back roof would be nice on those warm fall nights. Have a good day.

You could hinge it by the scoreboard and let it close south to north like a giant toilet lid.

Of course then we couldn't win because we don't have an OPF

Sure we would. Just leave men in charge. We always forget to put the lid down.

So the question is did having big crowds from the Mustang Mania campaign help Ron Meyers later recruit talent such as ED & CJ.
Or, put another way, would either have played for SMU had there been 7,500 fans attending SMU games their senior years in HS.
We are coming to the end of the road here. To our credit, we've thrown some serious $$$ at our coaching staffs. I just think we should also allocate some towards attendance and not wait simply on an improved W-L record (which WILL happen).

Gee's guys. I know it's been a little cold, but no need to be so rough, Maybe had a lone week. Just talking it up a bit like you guys often do. I'm well aware we are way to small to fulfill such dreams. It's kind of like dreaming for 50k fans in the stadium on a regularly. You have to admit it would draw people out of their comfort zones and be a good recruit draw as well. Oh sh*t, just woke from a nice dream to see a nightmare. Oh well, maybe a better direction next season. Have a good nite.
