Absolutely right. Gotta wonder if JJ ran Mumme off because he didn't want Mumme to show him up

Mumme left because he knew how bad 2014 was going to be. He knew there was no QB, he knew there was little talent, and he knew June was mailing it in. So he left while he could.

I think he understands what is going on around him now. JJ kept saying how "complicated" his offense was (I thought that was more about excusing poor performance). Nevertheless he has 9 months with a coaching staff explaining their offense. Parts of which he has seen before. He never had that with JJ - he had JJ for 6 weeks - and he was not first on the depth chart so how many reps did he get? He has been number 1 with this coaching staff since day one.

My only negative comment on Davis' play so far this year (and the good far outweighs the bad) is he needs to become more accurate. This would give his receivers more opportunities after the catch.

JMO, but JJs lack of flexibility was right up there with being a lazy recruiter so far as what he did and did not achieve at SMU.

I know I am going to get shot for saying this, but...

GG was awful year 1 for the first 6 games. It took way too long (6 games) for the coaching staff to adjust, but they finally added a zone read and simplified things, and GG played really well the second half of year 1.

In year two of GG, lots of high hopes. Mumme came in and changed the offense to be horizontal instead of vertical. We got off to a slow start because the Horizontal game failed to open space in the middle of the field for GG and others to run, and we were shut down offensively. After struggling through 4 or 5 games (including Montana State), there was a bye, June took over the playcalling from Mumme and went back to the vertical offense. That opened up space for GG to run and the offense went up a notch and GG performed better.

NOT saying that JJ and staff was flexible, because they weren't and Willis and last year are evidence. They took way, way too long to make the adjustments first year for GG to make him effective. But I wanted to share the other stuff.

It's easy/lazy to say JJ was 'inflexible' during his time here, but that was far from his biggest problem. He ran more with Line than he did at any other time during his coaching career and the offense looked a lot different (more horizontal, more two-back sets) when Mumme was here than it did the years he wasn't.
