Lance wasn't named early in the week before the Texas game.. It wasn't until after Wed practice that the decision was finalized. Prior to that, Lance and Mike Fisher were competing for the starting role. From practice on Monday on, I knew who would be the starter but it wasn't may call and the coaches didn't ask for my opinion. Lance had a confidence and air about him from play one during that Monday practice while Mike Fisher was nervous and unsure.
Fisher had started the year before against A$M but got his shoulder dislocated early in that game and was out the rest of the '79 season.
The final play of the Ohio State game was Garcia's long FG attempt to win the game. It was from the right hash and I was the left end. As soon as I hear the ball kicked I took off down the field in case it was short and they tried to run it back. And I took a wide lane to maintain outside contain (se, I know a little about that subject I harp on for season after season). So I was pretty much in the middle of the field and about 40-43 yards from the kick. I was obviously wide and very disappointing. The wind was swirling at that end of the stadium and one consul see a slightly irregular flight of the ball. Tough kick.
I do believe there are some similarities between the '80 win over UT and the recent UH win. Both wins were against highly ranked teams. Both games came during the middle of the season. Both games, the defense was outstanding. Both games had meaning. The two biggest differences were the '80 win had a more experienced team and was a rode victory.
And Stallion included stats which showed a great offensive performance. Note we rushed for 160 yards without a big name running back. It wasn't just a throwing game. And 107 plays is unheard of back then and not that common now.

2 quietest stadiums I ever walked out of were that one in Columbus and another tie in the Alamodome when Ramon Flannigan and SMU tied No. 7 ranked Texas A&M 21-21 in another game where we missed a last second FG
I was also at that game. I think it was actually considered a home game for SMU. I remember that Flannigan had an
awesome game, and you're right A&M was stunned !!!! So was I as we were big underdogs going into that game.

He was playing in 1980 with a big brace while recovering-never was too fast so it limited our running game. In essence McIllhenny's emergence signaled a change from one of Country's top passing teams in Ford's first 2 years to the Nation's top running program in the Pony Express. Ford was still a good QB but Meyer was smart enough to realize he was a square peg in a round hole because he wasn't fast enough
2) actually Ford played pretty well at Baylor but had a crucial fumble at the 7 yard line. There actually was a UH game that we lost 13-11 in Dallas between the Baylor loss and before the UT game
That's right
