Did he withdraw a scholarship offer when he first arrived here for a local kid? Or was that Bennett?

CP, a coach on Navasota's staff contacted the recruiting coordinator listed at SMU during JJ's term. The Mustangs were playing A&M that next weekend, and this was a 4-star O lineman who already had an offer from the Aggies, but wanted to trade up to SMU. Coordinator said he would pass it on, and did. Contacted by SMU, interest was there, but not a peep from HCJJ. No follow up, no phone call, and certainly no visit. When the position coach for SMU was talking to the recruit, he clearly stated that "Coach doesn't make off campus visits".
That cost us a much needed beef-mover on the line.
Thankfully that has changed. Here in central Texas, we get visits REGULARLY, even if there is minimal reason for them to be interested in our talent (like this year). Contact reminds folks you are around, and good manners matter when looking towards the future in recruiting.
BTW, that recruit went to Baylor, much to my annoyance and chagrin. Played three years, was NOT part of the team members that were abusing women. He is now in Austin writing computer programming code for Dell.

I truly hope Sonny stays and continues to build the program, but playing devil's advocate for a second, there are some key things that he has not done (yet).
1. Won a meaningful road game in November
2. Won a bowl game
3. Contend for a conference championship
4. Said definitively that he wants to stay at SMU when his name is actively being discussed for other job openings. It's hard to blame him here as a matter of negotiation leverage, but still, would have been nice.

I like what I've seen from Sonny. He's taken the program to new heights and hopefully they continue to go up from here. That secondary though...boy oh boy. They need some work.
Lets hope he sticks around and continues to build on the program.

Lots of social media hype but what’s the best we’ve finished under Sonny? 5th in the AAC?

FWIW, we were 5th when the 4 above us finished the top 25 and all of us had 10+ win seasons.
1) #17 Memphis (12-2)
2) #21 Cincinnati (11-3)
3) #20 Navy (11-2)
4) #24 UCF (10-3)
5) NR SMU (10-3)
Talk about an amazing year for the AAC. Too bad we laid an egg in Boca. We really need to get into a rhythm at winning our bowl games no matter the opponent.

I’m starting to get miffed at Sonnyon this. I’m reminded of Chad and his flirting with Baylor, then going to Arkansas. If Sonny wants to go to TCWho, GO and let’s move on. He has to know what these rumors and indecision is doing to the team and the fans.

I agree. At this point even if he stays he certainly has burned a ton of good will with the loyals.

The biggest problem I see is that Sonny has an agent involved who is looking to get his part of the action too. I think that was part of the problem with the Larry Brown situation also.

If we don't win this week, he may be on the bricks at the end of the season.

He’s negotiating with the SMU powers that be to make this a better program. Have patience. Sonny will do us right. Look for major facilities improvements.

Who is his agent? And please don't say Leigh Steinberg.
