He'd [deleted] about something else. Even though Stallion acts like it sometimes, don't pretend like that is all there is to complain about in SMU athletics.

You are correct.

I just have a feeling we might be at least heading in the right direction with Orsini. Would Copeland even have hinted at someone like Doh, I think not.

I talked to two folks at FAU yesterday. One was a self professed "basketball nut", and she was a member of the faculty. The other worked in the SID, both of them cringed at the thought of losing Doherty. They both agreed he was a "great guy" and what a great difference they could see in the basketball program in just one season. I for one, am thrilled at the chance of getting a coach of Matt Doherty's caliber!

Don't forget, we are in the quiet year of a capital campaign that lasts until 2011 to raise over $500MM. We already have 1/3 of the money for the new facilities. My suspicion is an announcement will be coming this fall that the necessary funds have been found to begin the basketball projects. SMU likes to make big splashes in the quiet phase of capital campaigns. $33MM from Meadows, some big donors are currently being solicited, possibly an announcement for a new facility to get everone charged for the big official kickoff later this year????????????????

Be happy, mrydel, and be happy enough to upgrade our seats. But please do not be happy about the way SMU handled Tubbs, ever. It was ugly and a PR butcher job and if it turns out better at the expense of a good guy. And make sure you're not happy if Maxie is not punished.

i'll be the 1st to agree that SMU f'd up in a huge way, Mad Max sucks, the SMU PR department is terrible, Tubbs wasn't given full discourse but .....NEXT.

Doherty and SMU officials were talking about terms of a contract and certain changes that need to be made within the basketball program. SMU officials would like to renovate aging Moody Coliseum and add a practice facility. SMU has raised close to $4 million for the project and needs a total of $12 million to complete it.

Let's see...Doherty stays 1 year at FAU, JT stays 2 years at SMU.

How quickly can SMU raise the last $8M and then how quickly can they actually complete the upgrades? Are we talking 2 years minimum?

Although both are critical, something tells me the certain changes pertain more to Model than Building. I would like nothing more than to see almost all-JC recruiting classes for the next 2 years.

Are you kidding me? Yuk. Maybe one or two to bridge the gap, but Doherty has worked at places like UNC and ND - he can recruit at a place with academic credibility without turning it (us) into one of the run of the mill truckstops for the marginally literate.

MD is certainly an upgrade from the 95 year old high school coach that I was expecting. Here are the pros and the cons. Pro- Dean Smith acolyte, friend of MJ, worked at institutions with academic restrictions, and is by all reports a good recruiter. He did a credible job at FIU a small school in a small conference. Con - white, his recruiting great successes came at institutions in Big Conferences who can go after just about anyone. ND has the CYO, Catholic school pipeline, and UNC is well UNC. Lastly, that little revolt by his UNC team that won the National Championship under Roy Williams. The big questions for MD now are: (1) Will Fall and Morris stay? (2) Can he recruit for a mid-major school with academic restrictions? (3) How good are his x's and o's? (4) Will SMU really upgrade the practice facility? (5) Will TCU begin to think we're copy cats? They have a Coach named Tubbs, we get a coach named Tubbs. They get a coach named Dougherty and we get a coach named Doherty. (6) How long will he stay if he is at all successful? All in all probably the best candidate available to us under the circumstances.

yep and both Matt D and Neil D were supposedly good recruiters at Kansas as assistants. That recruiting prowess hasn't really translated to TCU for Neil at all. I thought Evans would have been the better hire for us all around.
