Once again, whatever was in place to pay Davis, they could've piled on the $$ that went to Pony Up, as having him here wouldve created its own buzz.
I am not apoplectic about this because it isn't entirely true.
Butch Davis was hired by North Carolina on November 13, 2006.

This was before the 2006 Tulsa game, which SMU won, and the 2006 Rice game, which SMU lost.

Not really.
The story/rumor is still very possible.
Orsini wanted Bennett gone the minute he took the job.
Steve O wanted/wants his own man.
And he had Butch Davis ready to say yes last year.

But that doesn't make sense. Bennett would have been fired if he finished 5-7, which was a possibility at the time Davis was hired by UNC. So when did Orsini have Davis ready to say "Yes?" It clearly wasn't that firm a commitment when Davis took another job a couple of days after an SMU loss and more than two weeks before it was clear there would not be an opening.

"more than two weeks before it was clear there would not be an opening"
but Orsini wanted to can Bennett from day one. (imo)
i assume Orsini talked to Butch last fall
along the lines:
Orsini Sept/Oct/Nov: "we may have an opening if I can pull this off"
Butch Davis: "Sure, I would be interested"
Turner: Oct/Nov: "uh Steve....not so fast....lets see what happens"

In regards to Davis, I was told just yesterday when I spoke to someone who knows the situation. Orsini had series converstaions with Butch Davis and Davis was responsive but they couldn't make the numbers work. At that time last year there was not the commitment to pay 1.5 mill or more. How early in the season this conversation took place I do not know.

When it was quoted earlier by I believe Dwan or Thad about Orsini getting the guy he wanted last year. It's very likely Orsini had 2 or 3 "guys" he really wanted. In hiring A Div 1 head coach there are a lot details to work out in contract terms and money I doubt Seve O was only focused on one go to guy if talks brook down. Davis was probably one of those 2 or 3 guys Orsini targeted. If I remember right based on Hotseat.com Davis has a salary of 1.8 million with NC which was problaby his asking price we couldn't pay last year. Maybe Shula or Bowden were his other go to guys.
