I was extremely surprised that they were so hard in their comments about Bennett. Both said how much the team despised him and went on and on about it. In fact the only coach that they liked during their senior year was Rusty Burns, who they felt had a fantastic offensive mind that Phil would constantly overrule. The rest they didn't feel would have qualified for a good Texas' high school program. They liked a couple of coaches in their first two years, but again claimed Phil ran them off. Like I said, I was surprised at the depth of their feelings against Phil.
i have heard the same thing

As a student during the glorious Phil Bennett years I can tell you that about 99 percent of the players flat out couldn't stand the guy.

When you lose, often the head coach looses control of the players, etc. but these guys were a pretty fair team (5-7?). It just surprised me what they said and was even more surprised I had never been aware of it before.

Thank God the Mob Boss ran him off. Copeland was on auto-pilot!

Did anybody see this kid's picture? I think it's safe to say he resonates with the ladies.
No question that the quality of the women at SMU played a role in his decision. He said to himself, I can be the first guy to lead SMU back to the national rankings in over 20 years and they have the best looking women in the nation.

i couldnt stand him when I was a freshmen in high school much less a freshmen in college... Bartel solidified his emotional stability when he kicked a defensive lineman (at tarleton state) in the head during their spring game!
Best arm in recent history? yes. Best QB in recent history? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Ran him off? I think Mr. Bennett did enough to run himself off. Orsini just showed him the door which was already wide open.

My logic is just fine, thank you very much. And I'm not trying to degrade either of you. But the fact is that if Kaiser's the highest rated QB this decade, it's only because Rivals has only had numerical ratings for the last 4 recruiting classes. Most of the QBs I've listed - and there's quite a few of them - are or would have been ranked around the same level as Kaiser.
SMU 86 wrote:Also, if you don't put much stock in rivals ratings then stop using them to try to prove your point.
Since the Rivals rating system has only been around for 4 years, what I tried to do was examine some other metrics (like the Texas 100 list) to extrapolate a rating for players who were in earlier recruiting classes this decade.
The point I'm trying to get across without being overly blunt is that while Kaiser looks to be an excellent pick-up for the Stangs, he's not appreciably higher ranked than 4-6 other top SMU QB prospects of the past decade, and had Rivals implemented their numerical rating system 10 years ago, Kaiser would not be the highest rated QB in the last decade,
which is the answer to your original query.
But none of that should be construed as either my approbation or censure of Kaiser's abilities. The other point I'm making, if you know anything about the performance of our 'rated' QBs over the last decade, is that Rivals ratings are poor indicators of success (at least at SMU). As I've stated, I concur with you that Coach Jones is a much better evaluator of talent than the recruiting services.

Well, look at it this way PerunaPunch, if you are right, then Bartell, Meeks, Sanders, and McCowan would have been ranked about the same level as our new boy.....all 4 of those guys had at least a try out in the NFL and 3 of them made NFL rosters....if we put that kind of talent with June Jones, I like our chances.

In the last decade-ish, Sanders, McCown and Bartel all left SMU and had NFL careers. Bartel certainly had all the physical tools if he could have ever gotten his head on straight. Whatever happened to him after the Cowboys? Did he ever do anything with the Browns?

And unlike some of the former regimes, I think Jones will build the kind of relationships with his players that they a) don't just quit the team without the coach's knowledge, b) join a rock band, c) don't fight with refs at intramural games.
Did Meeks get an NFL tryout?!?!?!?

Hey.....Bennet knew every high school coach in Texas......which is about the level of a coach he was.
Meeks did get tryout......

Everyone's favorite player Willis liked Bennett enough to threaten to transfer if he were fired. How soon we forget.
