PK the difference in me and you guys is I don't pretend to know more than June Jones, his staff, and Steve Orsini on whats best for our program. Botton line?....I trust these guys know what they are doing....you and the others just assume and or imply..."Ah hell June is just an ego-maniac and will do our program harm at any cost". "Ah Hell Orsini dont know what he's doing". I dont claim to have all the anwers....it seems like you guys wanna pretend you do know more than the guys paid millions. Once again assuming the worst...just like with Peruna. A pattern of always assuming the very worst about the guys (Jones/Orsini) that have us where we are......Coach Jones....Coach Reinebold....Coach Suan...Coach Knight....maybe they know more than we do?...Is that just way past any sane person to believe? Who knows...maybe a kid in Tyler considering SMU might think "wow...SMU is on the beach in Hawaii...I wanna go there!"....Maybe June Jones knows how much press we'd get in Hawaii? Thats why I say I'll be happy where-ever we go....I trust the guys that brung-us this far!
I take that to mean you don't have a problem with it. A simple no would have sufficed. You shouldn't be so cavalier in your tossing of others in to your "you guys" category.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
I think most people would agree with the following:
Very happy with JJ Very happy with orsini Very excited to be talking about any bowls after 25 yrs Very confused as to why we are talking like we would not go to liberty if we win our conference Would go to Memphis but not Hawaii due to Christmas eve timing Since going to Hawaii instead of Liberty makes no sense - somewhat suspect of different agenda Hoping we have a decision to make
I think that about sums it up for most thinking fans.

What's "blowworthy" is wanting to go to a lesser bowl when you don't have to.
I think that Jones believes Hawaii is the greatest place on earth and he wants to reward the kids with a trip there as opposed to Memphis or anywhere else. I want the Liberty Bowl and the Conference Championship, but somethng tells me these kids want to go to Hawaii and he wants them to have that. Also, the BB team will be there and the double exposure will be very good. I have totaly mixed emotions. The team should be striving for the best they can get which would be the Championship in my eyes, but in their eyes the best may just be Hawaii.
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
I will be happy whatever bowl we go to. Just so we go to a bowl. If we win CUSA we should go to the Liberty Bowl because it is a bowl for the conference champion, it is a higher tier bowl than the Hawaii Bowl and instead of the athletic program going even deeper in debt by going to Hawaii, we could even make some $$$. In any event, I already have both Hawaii and Memphis hotel reservations and plan on making either game.
re: better bowl meaning more money for the program
I'm fairly certain that when I read the bowl rules for C-USA, I read that all teams reaching a bowl receive an equal share. Teams that do not play in a bowl also get a share, but it is smaller. Therefore, SMU would receive the same payout regardless of who went to the Liberty, as long as someone from the conference goes to the Liberty. It is true that traveling the team to Hawaii is more expensive that traveling the team to Memphis.
re: fans attending Liberty vs. going to Hawaii
There may not have been many SMU fans in the stands all these years, but the folks on this board are among those that have been there. Griping about people on this board not attending games is silly... THESE are the people who went.
The cost of going to Hawaii is not the issue for the large number of people on his board. Being away from family and commitments on Christmas is. This obstacle does not exist for a trip to Memphis.
Let's face it folks, if the team wants to go to Hawaii, then they should. We may be long suffering fans, and we may FEEL like we deserve something, but this is THEIR achievement, and they should be able to choose their reward.

It also pretty well sums it up for those of us who choose not to think.

Aren't conference champions obligated to play in certain bowls? That would mean if we win, we would have to play in the Liberty Bowl. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

$1200 is not too bad. Problem is if you have a wife, no way she's letting you go off to Waikiki for Xmas without her. Memphis, she doesn't care about, but Hawaii, no freaking way. Then you've got the problems of the kids. If you don't have available grandparents, they have to come along too. Time you figure in a rent car, meals and incidentals, you're well over $6K.
Wouldn't be a problem if it was still my first wife (serves me right for marrying a Baylor grad). I'd dump her and go. But I kinda like this one.
