Re: Baylor Turnaround
Guys Baylor is still on probation and the NCAA is always checking in with us. Gillispie was on the ticket earlier today and was talking about Baylor. The hosts asked him about his recruiting and he said that Drew didn't do anything wrong (take that for what its worth). Baylor takes on St. Mary's College in the Sweet 16 in houston tomorrow and we sold out the 17,000 tickets the NCAA gave us.

The Dukies prevail. Bunch of white stiffs and a good 3 point shooter. Baylor had the better athletes but couldn't handle the K
Re: Baylor Turnaround
Baylor would have had a better chance of staying in the game late if 7 footer Josh Lomars could have played smart instead of like an idiot. Maybe he was getting $ for tanking the game.....but the 3, 4 and 5 fouls were sophomoric and stupid. The Bears needed him and he threw in the towel for the Bears..he should be ashamed of himself for the rest of his life.
At least Drew could have called him aside at some point and said 'dude we need you...back off and stay in the fight.'
Lomar's only 9 minutes of playing time stupidity, cost Baylor the game.

Article says Drew hires an AAU coach trying to get John Wall (old news), he trash talks others programs, other coaches don't like him, he's a little too comfortable with AAU coaches (I never see anything specific here). How's that different from most D1 basketball coaches? A lot of this has to be factored in people being pissed because Baylor doesn't belong in the club...
It is my understanding that none of the other Big XII coaches will even shake his hand. Total scumbag. Do you remember what Knight said about him?

Too bad we don't have a scumbag like that coaching our team.

“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

Re: Baylor Turnaround
If SMU football continues improving then there will be people with zero evidence who throw out accusations such as "SMU must be cheating! There is no other explanation!! Other coaches do not like June Jones!!!"
Sorry, but that is not acceptable in my book.
Just because a down and out program is able to start doing better(e.g., SMU football or Baylor basketball), it does not automatically mean that something improper must be happening behind the scenes.
Scott Drew and his staff put more hard work into recruiting high school talent in Texas than any other program in America. Most of the time they do miss out on the elite prospects. But they still fight the hardest, and occasionally, they do prevail. For whatever reason, the public notices the handful of recruiting wins for Baylor but they conveniently ignore the (much) more frequent recruiting losses.
The SMU staff does not put forth nearly the same effort level in recruiting as Baylor. Doherty relies way too heavily on prep school kids, JUCO's, out of state kids, transfers, etc.

Re: Baylor Turnaround
I'm sure Drew is abiding by the letter of the law with the NCAA. But given the cesspool that basketball recruiting has become with AAU guys out there doing some shady things that some of that stink rubs off on Drew. Drew has by all accounts out-hustled everyone in DFW and we need to figure out what he's doing so we can either copy it, or turn him in. My view is that the Big XII membership and being able to play UT, OU and Kansas regularly is a selling point for Baylor to recruits that we do not have.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Re: Baylor Turnaround
Go to any certified AAU event in Texas where college coaches are allowed to show up and there is at least one good prospect that baylor would want. You will always see a Baylor coach there. And I do mean every single time. Period. Baylor coaches will attend even the smallest events.
Recruits always notice which college coaches are showing up to see them play. They also notice which coaches are NOT in attendance.
There are a lot of AAU events in Dallas all summer long. How do you think it affects SMU's chances with a prospect when he is playing in Dallas and a Baylor coach makes the effort to drive up from Waco to watch him but nobody from SMU will make the effort to drive 10 or 15 minutes to represent?
Doherty and the SMU coaches will show up at the bigger events and they also attend some of the medium sized events. But they do not work everything. They do not work their asses off at recruiting Texas high school talent. How many high school players signed by Scott Drew ever received serious attention SMU? Not many. But it should have been almost all of them.
