Being a Fan - Advice Please

most fun ive ever had at an SMU game (in the stands) was last year v. rice when me and a fellow expony talked trash the entire second half to this guy (we also went after the back up QB for a little bit):

no profanity, just a whole lot of smack. we actually had the majority of the rice team laughing.... and a few of the players came up to us after the game to tell us how funny it was. we're actually considering making a road trip to rice to do it again

that being said, that kind of fun on the west side of the stadium would never be tolerated....

Agree is most cases, but I've been known to playfully heckle an opponent or two. Nothing profane or belittling. Just have some fun with them.

However, there were two students 2 rows behind me yesterday that were just yelling for the sake of yelling at the other team. No game whatsoever. Just really annoying (i.e. "Hey #37, you suck", then turn around and high five the other [deleted] and laugh).

Got worse when they started cheering on Kelly Turner. The problem with that was we were on defense at the time. A little before halftime they left. Thank God, because I didn't want to have to tell our own fans to STFU.

The easy solution is mark the upper sections as "casual" sections, and the lower sections as "active" sections. If you don't like standing, yelling, or get angry that someone drops the A-word (@$$) within 4 rows of your precious little girl teenager (who says that all day at school anyway), then move to the top section.

Don't be sending any of those cranky folks to Section 203. We stand and yell all we want. Guys in front of us have a big flag they wave all game we all love it.

There's a good mix up there. Coach Mac sits in the seat in front of me and Hooks ( I was in his class 40 years ago) showed up last night. They don't stand up and cheer a lot, but they don't complain either. We more or less do what we want. They couldn't make my two sons sit down anyway. I am the gray hair of the group and I am louder than any of them.

With a smaller student body and decades of lost younger fans, we have a larger % of older fans.

All fans are welcome and needed, but some will bring more energy and help the fan base grow while others will be more reserved and be more content seeing their same group each game and will feel threatened by change and newcomers.

Those with a little more get-up-and-go need to respectfully get the big s-stick out and stir the pot.

I don't think the author of this post grew up in Dallas. It was unheard of for anyone to stand up a SMU or Cowboys games for years except on big 3rd down or after scores. I think one reason our crowds were more reserved is because there was no liquor served near the Cotton Bowl except for beer during State Fair time.

I don't think anyone is advocating the entire stadium be standing the entire time a la the student section.
I think people just want to be able to stand up and make noise during big moments without people staring/glaring/getting bent out of shape, which happens depending which section you are in on the west side.
It's kind of weird. Each section seems to have it's own personality on the west side.

Lived in Dallas my entire life. Cowboy season ticket holder for over 25 years.

Stated nothing about standing up.

This attitude IS the problem -- we didn't do it at the Cotton Bowl and haven't done it in the last decade.

I've had seats in 103 for 4 seasons, and have now had seats in 104 for 5 years. We don't seem to have any issues with folks standing up, at least not around row 14. Couple of buddies have seats in the same section, but up about 7-8 rows. No problems there either.

If someone told me to sit down if I were cheeing on 3rd downs, kickoffs, and important points of the game, I would kindly tell them that it's not the opera or ballet, and that it's college football. Yelling and standing up is part of it.

If the old cronies don't like the noise, then they should "Pony Up" for club seats inside. Otherwise, they should pretty much shut up and deal with it, or move to the end zone. If I ever get that old and cranky, I'll beg you guys to shoot me.
