Re: Major Difference tween coaches
To me, both coaches seem to be very good at their jobs. There is no question that Patterson has done an outstanding job at TCU. His record speaks for itself. I have a friend who knows Patterson well. My friend is a former SWC coach, partly at SMU and very football savvy. He says that Patterson is a ball of fire on the practise field and on the sideline. In person, away from football, very low key and very nice. One of the interesting things about Patterson to me is the parallels between Patterson and the coach at Boise State, besides how similar their names are. Boise State first really became well known under Dan Hawkins. Hawkins got the high profile job at CU and has not had much success. The guy who replaced him, Peterson, was one of Hawkin's assistants and he has more than sustained Hawkin's success at BSU. Perhaps Peterson was responsible for much of the BSU success when Hawkin's was coaching there.
Franchione came to TCU and turned the program around with Patterson as an assistant. Franchione took the high profile job at Alabama and then A&M and was not able to succeed enough to keep from getting fired. Patterson succeeded Franchione and has more than sustained the success that Franchione enjoyed. Maybe Patterson was the reason that Franchione did well at TCU and New Mexico before that.
I was not enthusiastic about JJ when he was hired because I don't like a pass first offense and I did not think that JJ would coach physical, hard nosed football, especially on defense. I would rather have seen Paul Johnson get the job. I was wrong and I now believe that JJ and his staff are close to the perfect fit for SMU. From what I have heard from afar(Arizona) I would really like it if I had a son who could play football and could be coached by JJ and his staff.

All day.

One has never beaten the other....
Hoping for a great game on Friday and the only time I don't root for the ponies.

Re: Major Difference tween coaches
Patterson has refined his image from a raving lunatic on the sideline to one of the top coaches in the nation. He demands total effort and preparation and his teams play physical which carries over from practice. The missing piece to get over the hump from being a top 25 team and in the "Mobile Bowl" to a top 10 team and BCS bowls was his offensive coord leaving for Minnesota a couple years back. Now they are a complete team not just defense and special teams. Who knows about June. He has a reputation for getting guys in the NFL but how many QBs, running backs and wide receivers have been drafted? How many have been successful in the NFL? He has a plan and is evidently good to work for since he has a pretty good staff with a lot of experience and you can't knock the record. They are opposites with good track records.

one coach is feeling a lot of pressure coming into this game...the other is not
it shows in their demeanor

Re: Major Difference tween coaches
Patterson wins the head-to-head match-ups...
Patterson has more kids in the NFL...if you look at both Hawai'i and SMU...
Patterson has a better winning % and more wins versus BCS teams...
Patterson has more bowl wins (I believe...feel free to fact check me on that)...
So, if I am understanding you all correctly, June Jones is better because he is a) in better shape and b) was a better player?
Regardless of my TCU affiliation, I think I would prefer Mr. Patterson if I had to pick one coach to run my program.

Great point!
Patterson is a coach with more than a gimmick offense!
Re: Major Difference tween coaches
It can't be denied that Patterson is a good coach. But I believe Jones is the right coach for SMU at this time because he's had experience at taking a bad football program and turning it around, and that's what needed to be done here.

That's true, so why do SMU people feel the need to rip on Patteson?

By PatteRson is our most hated rival's coach. No one denies his abilities, it's just you've got to rip on him because he represents TCU.
"smupony94: Harry, you have been promoted to purveyor of official status capabilities."
