Fans Asked To Show Support For U.S. Military, Wear Black

Dec. 24, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - As a tribute to the Armed Forces and the U.S. Military Academy, SMU is calling for a "Blackout" and asking fans to wear black for the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl. Known as the Black Knights, Army will be taking on SMU in the post-season bowl on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

"While we recognize that they may be our opponent for this game, we want to show our thanks and appreciation to the Armed Forces and the U.S. Military Academy and its student-athletes for their service to our great nation," said SMU Director of Athletics Steve Orsini. "This will serve as a tribute to service men and women across the globe for all their sacrifices to protect our freedoms."

Black SMU apparel is on now sale at the SMU Barnes & Noble Bookstore (3060 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205) and online from TeamFanShop here.

SMU also announced that as a special tribute to legendary Mustang quarterback and television broadcaster Don Meredith, who died Dec. 5, the Mustangs will wear a special "17" sticker on their helmets for the game. Meredith was a two-time All-America selection (1958 & 1959) on the Hilltop, setting a Southwest Conference record with a 69.6 completion percentage in 1957.

Our 8,000 will hardly constitute a "black out". Who thinks up this krap? I'll be wearing SMU colors, thank you.

The more I think about this the madder I'm getting. First, who in the world would think that black is honoring our service people? Black will be honoring the Army Black Knights-------if we are to honor our country (our service men & women) then real SMU supporters will be wearing the correct colors. I'm gonna have to send some emails to people b/c this is embarrassing if they announce SMU is honoring our country by wearing BLACK!?!?!?! Geez................

So.......we don't want the recruits to know which team is which? This is a really STUPID idea........hope it wasn't yours!!!!!!!!

Something to think about, from a young prospective.........which I fear is lost on many of this crowd. Recruits and yep...our players will be jazzed up if we break out black unis........especially since this has all been tied up with honoring our troops. Black unis will be different and special, which the players are keyed into. Black unis will be something the boys will be pumped about when they fly out on the field to what I hope will be a huge sound of support............if it happens that is.

Whatever happened to honoring your school/team by wearing the school's colors? Wearing black in NO way shows we are honoring our troops/country-that is BS. It's someone's way of pushing black on us and hoping we will accept it if it's said to honor our troops. It's a FOOTBALL game and each school should wear their SCHOOL'S COLORS!!! I fear that our traditions are being lost on people who have no ties to our school---except for their paychecks! No, I won't give a SMU team dressed in black the same loud reception I would give a team dressed in OUR colors---------you know, RED & BLUE!!!!
KICK 'EM MUSTANGS!!!

That's sad that you would not support the kids on the field because of some marketing decision made at an administrative level. Those kids need and deserve your same loud reception. They play their hearts out.

The boys playing the game are really excited about the possibility of wearing something special on a special day. Period. Do you also have a problem wearing green on St Patty's day for example. I doubt that we are in danger of changing school colors and I will support what is in practice at the game. If the players who are the ones playing the game are into it..so will I be into it. Lord, let them have a little fun wearing black for one game. ( if it indeed happens ) Recruits, I strongly doubt will have a hard time differentiating between the two teams. Everyone wear what you feel best shows support for whoever you choose. In the mean time, now everyone has something new to [deleted] about on here. Funny Stuff...........

Good point. The players earned the right to play in the bowl game and we should be happy to support them

As someone said earlier, the book store will be sold out of their limited supply of black smu gear, so here's what mustang supporters can do: Go to the local catholic supply store and buy either priest or nun vestments; go to the game and cheer loudly for our mustangs. Doing that we can be known as "The Notre Dame of the South " instead of " The Harvard of the South ".......ERIN GO BRAUGHSTANGS

Wear Red or Blue!!!!

I don't care what color you people wear. I'm concerned about the formation of the band and what song they will be playing.

i'd be really excited to see us wear black unis...once. I don't think anyone is advocating changing our school colors, guys.

There is a reason that even the most respected teams in the country broke out special nike combat uniforms this year...recruits and young kids dig it, and I do too.

If Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, Boise State, Miami, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, TCU, Virginia Tech and West Virginia did it this year, I think we can too.

you old farts probably still have this cell phone, don't you??
