Hey dubs- first off- what are 'rugs'? I'm not familiar with that expression. As for the 'orientals' I was never aware that they resented that name. It was intended to cover all of the Asian countries not just one or two in particular.
Now when one of the posters mentioned advertising in the 'Mexican community' I thought it was a good idea. We should make the Latin community aware that we have many latinos playing soccer for us. As we all know, soccer (futbol) is a passion for them and they will support those programs. Who knows we may find a couple of players that are good enough to earn scholarships to play for us.
BTW- I was not intending to derail this topic into one of race relations.

GO PONIES!!!

smudubs wrote:I didn't know that rugs expressed their feelings! I know that Asians often get upset by being referred to as "orientals." No offense to you Red because I know what you are getting at. I often agree that we have taken political correctness too far, but some need to be aware of how others can view the comments they make as racist. I've read on this board that we should "exploit mexicans" and get a raper on campus to appeal to the "urban community". Now the oriental comment.

Personal, I don't pretend to be politically correct and make fun of everyone so please don't take this as a slam on any poster. The difference in many cases is that I know what I say is offensive and just don't care.

Hope you mean a rapper. Do not need a raper on campus. :D

I will be making my first visit to The Boulevard at Parents' Weekend this year. I have tailgated at Univ. Of Delaware games for the past 30+ years (they avg. over 20k per game even though they're 1AA). I have to say that even though I'm very outgoing, when I heard you just sort of stop by different tents and drink and eat there, I feel a bit like I'm taking advantage of someone. I am a new SMU parent, so at least I feel like I have some tie to the school. If someone doesn't, I'm sure it would seem even more awkward. General crowd tents seem like a good idea as long as they're well advertised along with ticket sales to make people welcome.

i've said this a million times. the [deleted] snob attitude that sometimes goes on around here and around the campus really hurts us in so many different ways. It's time to distance ourselves from that crap. Can't stand it.

There was nothing bigoted about my 'exploit the mexicans' post unless you think it's bigoted to say the Mexican immigrant community loves soccer (not debatable), or that it's bigoted to want to get them at games (the opposite is bigotry) or that 'exploit' is a negative word, as if we don't exploit alumni, students, area parents via band day or FCA day or the various bball halftimes.

And in the 'rapper' issue, what music do you suggest to appeal to the non-parkie group that we currently never invite on campus? Classical? Calypso? Norwegian Death Metal?

Interesting thread. I have not looked at it until tonight. I am one of the guys from the Special Delivery camp. Mark, Clark, Myself, and the rest of our group try and make everyone feel welcome. Sure there are some snots here, but there are snots in every facet of life. There are also a lot of really good people here. Sometimes, you just have to be the first to extend a hand. Sorry, if I'm not as friendly as I would like to be. My nerves start kicking in a couple of hours before game time! It's great to see the newbies expressing their thoughts on this subject. I want to extend an invitation to EVERYONE. Stop by and visit, I know you will feel welcome!!!

Yes Mrydel, I meant rapper not raper.

Couch I never meant to imply that you were bigoted in anyway. I apologize if my comment came across that way. I've read enough of your post to know that you do not seem to be bigoted. My point was simply that any mention of exploiting a minority group is necessarily going to come across as insensitive. Mrs. Dubs and I actually laughed when we read the post and I told her "let's throw in a bucket and chicken and a watermelon or two and make this a party."

And yes, Asian generally resent being referred to as oriental. There are oriental rugs and Asian people.

The reason I posted this is because it is relevant to this conversation. If we are truly trying to be inclusive of all walks of life on the boulevard and at games, we have to be mindful of the things we say and the perception of certain minority groups. The comments that I referenced could be a serious turnoff to some. And while I know no one meant to offend anyone with these statements, it is one of the things I hated as a minority at SMU.

how is our tailgate "welcome wagon" any different then others? I have been to tons of college tailgates and i think ours is at least as friendly as anyone else - and I have heard that from newbies - "SMU way friendlier then I thought" is the exact quote I have heard - and usually from opposing fans. I am proud of how we are with visitors.

I think a lot of you need to actually get out and explore the full extent of the BLVD. There are multiple vendors selling food around the flagpole, bounce houses and games for kids, stages and plenty of places and activities for newbies, unattached fans and visiting fans. There's a whole area SE of the main quad where anyone can set up shot.

I've never seen alcohol for sale, and I don't expect that to change, so bring your own or be prepared to mooch.

Is it perfect, no, I think there is room for improvement. I thik signage from where the shuttles drop off and more signage in general would be helpful and I like the idea of a GA/welcome tent of sorts.

Btw, I've seen JG's Mom on the Blvd and away games and visited with her, so i think your assertion was stupid.

joeybradford wrote:I know a friend of mine feels too uncomfortable to socialize in the blvd with anyone she doesn't know already. She has plenty of money but feels uncomfortable as a Native American. People are quite often communicating in ways that are racial slurs to her race (like saying redskins or tomahawk chops at sporting events). She goes to games with other women in her family from teens to, at one time, over 90 but hasn't even gone to the blvd for 15 or 20 years.
You might hear them speaking a dying native language at the football games.

I haven't been blvding since '93 but it doesn't have anything to do with money or class just usually a tight schedule where I usually get in and get out.

Correct, calling Asians 'Orientals' is either a sign of bigotry (least likely) or stupidity (most likely).

Either way you don't look good.
