i take the statement to be that smu is pursuing bcs/aq affiliation and we are talking about the big 12 because they are in the news with an apparent opening. i think i would be just as happy if it were another such avenue, but i don't know what that would be.big east? we have a chance for aq only because all the bcs are looking to capture more (tv) dollars any way they can. its all about the money.
makes you feel all gooey inside about the leaders of our academic/amatuer sports institutions doesn't it?

The Big question is if A&M leaves, what happens with UT? Will they go indy? If so the Big XII looks a whole lot different. If they stay (and I think they will), they have two concerns. (1) Texas recruiting is now open to the entire SEC. So, how would you respond? Would you increase the number of Texas BCS schools to make poaching a real free for all and hope you can repeat what you did in the SWC (namely get all your opponents in trouble with the NCAA) and have some modicum of control over the process? Or would you go independent and let the Big XII back-fill and have no control over the situation? I think the control freak wins out in Austin. (2) Keeping Alums happy. I know Whorn alums love to go on road trips and have big tailgate parties, so adding Houston and SMU might help with that. The question is whatever Texas wants, Texas will get as far as the Big XII is concerned. My guess is that now they probably are less concerned about more BCS programs in Texas as they are with Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee getting to recruit in Texas. Adding more bodies gives them more allies when the SEC invasion occurs.

Texas isn't going indy - the LHN will NOT replace the Big XII, even without A&M.
The Big questions are:
Do they want to expand the TV footprint and who fills this need for them?
Are they aggressive and go back to 12 or even 14, or do they simply plug the hole with one school?
If they try to plug the hole, we aren't the answer. If they are aggressive, we have a shot - I'd say about 40%, or just under even money.

What's kind of funny is that Dennis Dodds with CBS Sports has stated several times since SO went public that "SMU is pushing for the Big 12 and has gone to back to back bowl games- oh, so that's all it takes now to get in?" Yet a school that hasn't won a conference title since the 1990's is making the entire college football world watch with baited breath as to what they're going to do.

Both Memphis and Louisville are second class schools in 2nd tier cities. Would the whorens really want to be playing that level of school in FB. Think about the strength of schedule- a joke.
The whorens need to be more concerned with the flood of SEC recruiting that is going to start when the ags move.
GO PONIES!!!

Didn't have a problem playing schools like Iowa State or Kansas State. Or Texas Tech. They may not quite be at the level of Memphis or Louisiville, I don't know, but this whole 'we're too good of schools to be associate with' thing is a bit overstated. They need to accept that they have holes to fix and take care of that problem first.

True but A&M can sellout 70k every Saturday, or Sunday and they draw a nice Nielsen rating when on TV....something most of the replacement schools mentioned can't bring to the table...the fact that they haven't won since the 90s doesn't mean much.

who "outed" them? isn't this supposed to be a big step forward in their "new" life?

I know, apples to pizza...still, funny because he used on-field success to assert why we shouldn't be in the convo.

Reading these comments about TV exposure, recruiting footprint in TX, etc., am I crazy or should we be trying to follow the Aggies into the SEC as no. 14? I can answer the first question, yes I am out of my damned mind, but the second suddenly doesn't seem quite so absurd. It gives the SEC everything it wants: even divisions, DFW TV coverage, two major inroads to Texas recruiting. It gives us exposure in LA (which we recruit heavily and with mixed results), plus a major stage to improve our national efforts, particularly out east. When teams like Alabama or LSU come to play, if an expanded Ford can't accommodate we can always move to Jerry World (or even back to the Cotton Bowl if the city of Dallas would get on board). We can certainly hang with Miss St., Vandy and some of the other schools, and we get a much more stable situation for us. It is a pipe dream, I know, but something to think about.

You are crazy if you think we are on any list in association with the SEC

Thanks, NickSMU17, I've snapped back into reality. I know there's no chance in Hades, but wanted to show that we might want to at least think bigger than the Bevo 9. It's a conference on the brink, not the answer to our prayers. As a stepping stone to something better, it is a nice move, but make no mistake it is not the place we want to be when the realignment music stops.

A&M is funny with their arrogance. Their on the field performance does not warrant an invite to the SEC, no doubt. But A&M's strength is their following, which thrumps their win/loss record.
As for us, our only chance is to improve our performance on the field, like TCU. That with our biggest asset - location, location, location is what we have sell. Unfortunately we will
Ikely never have attendance on our side.
