If we are left in a CUSA w/o UCF, ECU, or Houston yes.... We should go independent.

UPDATE: CBS Sports' Brett McMurphy has the pipeline into today's Big East conference call.
"Big East authorized conference to engage in formal discussions to include 12 football playing schools," he tweeted.
---
UPDATE: For the second straight Monday, Big East officials will participate in a conference call to discuss the league's future.
According to Pete Thamel of the New York Times, "Although expansion will be a primary topic, no invitations are expected to be issued.
"One topic that will be discussed is an increase in the league's exit fee, which is $5 million and could be raised to about $10 million."
While those same officials continue to talk about what they might do, they're going to lose one of their schools. TCU is expected to announce its intention today to accept the Big 12's offer.
---
UPDATE: ESPN Big East blogger Andrea Adelson says that before the Big East can think about adding new members, it needs to do whatever it can to keep its current roster from shrinking any further (see below).

I fully think going independent would be crazy, however, if we did, perhaps we could schedule BYU every year and the mormons would let us join their tv network. Every tv network needs more live events to broadcast, and it already has pretty decent national distribution.

MVC in basketball is nothing to sneeze at, though. Take any seat at the table you can get

Brett McMurphy
Big East authorization by presidents was in morning teleconference today. Question is which 12 do they end up?
Supposedly SMU is 5th or 6th pick which leaves us on the outside

If they are now authorized to pursue going from 6 teams to 12 teams, I have to think we are looking pretty good, here.

Who are the options?
Navy
Air Force
UCF
Temple
ECU
SMU
UH
'Nova?

OK so they are currently at 8. TCU is not coming so that doesn't change anything. Syracuse and Pitt are bolting to the ACC. BE then is down to 6. If they want to get to 12 that means they have to add 6. if we are 5th or 6th pick we are in, right? Or are they talking about getting to 12 before the defections and then sit at 10?

And note, the "rumor" headline on ESPN said AFA was not a target and ONLY named SMU!
