You cant use any of them. They don't have a RECORD to go by coaching at a small private school that can't put 20.000 fans in the seats and a portion of the faculty wanting to make the football program into a rowing team. You have to go by a RECORD.

By the way, the Tom Landry comment, you have to read up on his historical RECORD to understand the commit.

BangoBongo, how come you are using such gross tone. Are you now trying to run SMU fans off? I played college ball in a different state. I can easily go there and support them. My family has a long history of supporting SMU and I have a Masters from the school. I don't call you names and like idiot because I'm not that kind of person. However, you obviously are not so accommodating to others views. By the way, I have also coached in four sports on the high school and Jr high level - including football. I probably know SOMETHING about coaching. BangoBongo, be civil. You don't always know everything about all subjects.

We need a coach who can compete with the best and one that emphasizes strong defense. JJ has never proven to be successful at the BCS level. When he went undefeated with Hawaii he got destroyed by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. I am also concerned with the R&S offense and whether it is viable at the BCS level. Has any team recently been in contention for the national title running the R&S? Sure it does its job in C-USA where defenses aren't great but what about in the Big East? The Big East weather will surely have an effect on our pass-happy offense as well. And 4 Jones recruiting classes in you'd expect JJ to have a solid QB and a team able to win a C-USA championship but that hasn't happened yet.

I don't mean to sound like a pessimist but these are just my honest concerns and I'd love some feedback from you all.

LOL were you not an SMU fan the last 20 years? SMU was a perennial bottom 5 program from 89-2008. Its amazing that in his 3rd year we won our division! And weren't we co-champions in 09? That is incredible and speaks volumes about Jones and his staff/system. And I would not expect him to have an awesome QB yet. Until recently, SMU had to be one of the hardest schools to recruit to even though we are in DFW. If I was a recruit and came to an SMU game I would not be impressed, no matter who the coach is.

i GUESS YOU ARE ADDRESSING ME. Then, the question is where have you been the last 40+ years? I go to all of the games. I had a coach friend of mine with me last week and a banker the game before. I go so far back that I got Don Meredith's autograph at a Spring game when he played for the Mustangs. Now, from what you are saying it sounds like you want me to go to some other team and support them. I wonder why? SORRY SMU21TCU10. I was answering an earlier post that BangoBongo has suggested in a round about way I need to see things his way or go elsewhere.

June's fortunes will come down to his recruitment and development of quarterbacks, so far results have been dismal considering his reputation. If this trend continues we'll the Baylor of the Big East.

Oh c'mon, our qbs and runningbacks are look pretty damn good. I mean we got Gilbert to be our first QB, we have printz, we have burcham, all highly ranked Qbs... we picked up a 4 star running back and also have line's younger brother, and Im not too knowledgable on all the other players, but we are the best non-aq conference team in recruiting believe ranking 47. Again this is impressive, since most recruits want to be able to play the big time teams (AQ). Yes, JJ blows and I havent been a fan too much since I think our WR have been doing an outstanding job picking up his slack. When we go BE, we might be struggling against Boise and off and on with Houston, but we should be consistently #3 in west division. If BYU comes in that will be another struggle, but it will be more fun going up against tough teams.

Burcham and Printz haven't signed anything binding them to the school yet (both play in SEC territory) and we get 1 season of Gilbert (possibly 2) provided he can win the starting job. Our QB situation is far from being settled and we won't take off until it is.

Burcham is injured which will detract anybody from taking what they might consider damage good. In which will be benefit for us cause he will have plenty time to heal and practice. Also from what I heard Printz is pretty hardcore SMU. Gilbert being in the Big East shouldnt be a problem and he will have that sense of urgency which he will want to do the best he can possibly do. Im not concern at all with those two positions Im more worried about our O line handling the different level of competition and our secondary on defense being able to stop the pass game effectively.

Idiot, I was going by his record at Hawaii. Hawkins was a coach at a small school, BSU. Every coach is fighting with faculty. I am going by record against BCS schools, I don't care what JJ has done the in the Reach Around Bowl. I only care about his RECORD against RANKED TEAMS. Look it up and then let it soak into your head for a minute, he sucks against good teams and I don't want to hear about beating our cross town rival. They suck this year

Hawkins did not lead Boise State to any BCS bowls and he failed miserably at Colorado. So much for your argument.

Chill out dude...time will tell. JJ didn't have the resources at Hawaii, nor a recruiting budget....he has all he needs here and we won't really know about BCS winning until all is in place, so all this posturing on here is just a waste of time.

Hawkins made BSU relevant and then someone made them a great team. Okay guy, explain to me how JJ is going to have us winning the BE conference when he can't even get us to win the C-USA. Explain that! You can't cause he's a turn around specialist!

Hawkins accomplished less at Boise State than Jones did at Hawaii. He is merely in his 4th season at SMU and took us from a 1 win season to 3 consecutive bowl games. Frankly, this is his only his 4th recruiting season and it takes 5 good recruiting years to start seeing the type of results you are asking for. If you include this season, that gives us 3 excellent recruiting classes to compete with. By the time we are in the Big East we should be able to compete with the teams in that league and maintain are trend of bowl eligibility. I see no reason why over time we will not continue to improve our recruiting and eventually land in a BCS bowl with Jones as our coach. You argue that he has not proven that he can compete on a BCS level. If that is true, you have to accept that he has not proven that he cannot compete at the BCS level. He has never coached in a BCS conference!
