2andlong, thanks for all of your help with the Operation Sellout. I'm sure that took a lot of effort on your part and it was much appreciated- we need more dedicated Ponyfans like you

ponyinNC wrote:You cannot compare us to traditional college football powerhouses like USC. I lived in Palo Alto for years and you cannot compare us to Stanford either...it just doesn't work. They have traditional rivalries with most of the pac 12 that span generations. Vandy is SEC football, and they draw based on that and their opponent.

Of the schools you listed Nick, i'd say TCU most mirrors us. And I think we are pretty much following their model already, albeit 8-10 years behind.

Look at Wake again. ACC is comparable to new Big East, minus the traditional rivalries. They draw 31k a game, and they haven't been good in years. They have a small student population as well. I'd like to see how they market to Winston-Salem.

Agreed. Wake is a good comp to look into and they're a good academic school, which is a positive. TCU is probably the best comp due to our location only. The key difference is that tcu has been able to get the ugly step child (Ft Worth) to fully support them. If you look at the ft. star telegram, they go out of their way not to talk about SMU. They prefer to talk about Baylor, A&M, UTA, etc, but purposefully avoid talking about SMU. The real remedy though is winning football games. If you win over an extended period of time, they will come. We haven't done that. Regardless, we need a real marketing campaign that should target the students first (I like what Wake does with their student program), alumni second and dallas-area residents third.

ALl draw pretty well

only BC and TCU compete with NFL. And TCU less so.

Winston-Salem is a smaller city in NC, population of about 230k. Only problem with comparison to SMU is that Wake doesn't really compete with pro sports.

But they have small enrollment, they are not really good at any sport these days, and most of their alums move away after graduation...yet they still average 31k per game. My question is how do they manage that??

Phillip Morris used to hand out free packs of cigarettes at the games. Buddy of mine hated football but went to WF games for that
