I still don't understand why we don't give away tickets. Who cares if they count towards the official attendance? If we give away 1000 end zone tickets per game to local high school/middle school students and their families, it's still a positive. Some of them will have a great time and come back again with a paid ticket. Plus we do make money off of concessions and souvenirs they buy. Plus the team sees and hears 1000 more people in the stands. Why are we hung up on the fact that the NCAA won't count them? They don't count the empty seats either.

couldn't agree more; we know what games are going to be poorly attended (Rice comes to mind). Better to give away tickets and create a better "in stadium" atmosphere than worry about official attendance figures. Borrow a page from the Dallas Cowboys' history...let Dad buy an adult endzone ticket and bring 5 kids free, bring back "Mustang Mania" giveaways, etc...

why would anyone buy a ticket if they're giving them away free?

I'm not talking about anyone... I'm saying at schools. So for the first game, we give tickets to Plano schools. Next game, we give tickets to DISD schools. Next game, Irving, etc. Not just a free-for-all at the ticket window on gameday. Limit the number of freebies, and control the distribution.[/quote]

The NCAA does not allow ticket give aways like this. To them, it is gifts to potentially eligible recruits.

our most loyal supporters are going to continue to buy season tickets...so they can get the best seats and to support the program

I don't think they will be overly upset if "giveaways" created a 20k plus crowd for that season finale/senior day game vs Rice...and you hope that most of those freebies will root for the home team

Heck an idea is get some corporate sponsors to give out coupons at the end of the game for a winning section like they do at the stars game. We just need to add in some festivities when the game isnt being played. Do the rangers' dot race and the winning color receives blah, hand out cards (red, green, blue) and must be present at the end of the game to receive the coupon. Just little gimmicks like that never hurt.

All of those things cost money. Money SMU doesn't have.
