If they leave for another school during recruiting season then they should not be allowed to work for the other team during a certain notice period. The coaches can continue to be paid and would be covered by any contractual duties until their notice period expires. This would help provide more stability to programs and also stop so much of this piracy that goes on in college sports.
If that would have been in place SMU would never have gotten Chris Banjo when June can to SMU. Also, if JP comes to SMU we would not want that stipulation placed on him. Also, what to stop the head coach from recruiting those players and you can't stop the recruit from calling the school that his recruiting coach went to.

My suggestion is to stop the piracy that goes on right in the middle of recruiting season. The fact of the matter is that Klemm spent time developing relationships with these players while on SMU's payroll. He was representing SMU. It's not fair for us or other programs that we do not get to benefit from the time, money and resources simply due to the fact that the coach decided to leave us. If there were this policy in place, most changes would take place after the season ends. I believe that adds stability to programs and prevents this type of piracy. The reality is that many of the players that Klemm is going after were those he spent time recruiting, again while on SMU's payroll. That is the basic premise of the garden leave. I think JJ came in January. We may have lost some recruits but the fact of the matter is that it does add stability.

June came to SMU with 3 weeks to go in the recruiting period and got Chris Banjo to decommit from Hawaii and commit to SMU. Would you want Jason Phillips under those restrictions if he can to SMU next week? Also, what to stop Mora from offering Klemm recruits since the recruits know Klemm is going there? Mora offered 2 of Klemms recruits directly already without them even talking to Klemm because Mora knows who Klemm is recruiting. Just like we know who JP is recruitng and will offer them. It works both ways it should all even out if we get JP. We like these things when we did it to other schools but have a hissy fit when it happens to us. This is not a rule that would even be considered except by schools that are yelling sour grapes.

Sometimes you benefit and sometimes you lose, but my suggestion is to add some stability. I think it helps with all these programs that want to take coaches during the middle of the season. At least with JJ, his season at Hawaii was over.

Does not make a difference if the season was over becuase Hawaii lost Banjo with less time to recover (at least now we have more time to recover). Heck, UCLA's season was over when they got Klemm. Also, you can't stop the Head Coach from offering players that the coach he hired recruited. You could not enforce the rule. Again, would you want JP to be under those same rules if he came to SMU?

It is implemented in some businesses to try to mitigate the loss of business from certain employees leaving. The theory is that they developed that business while on the company's payroll so they will pay them during this notice period to mitigate any loss of business. Nothing is to stop the new company from stealing business or clients, but it does work to a large extent. My suggestion was to try to limit the player movement that takes place after coaches leave. The players tend to go with the coaches that recruited them so I have a feeling it would would still work to a large extent. I doubt these players would all leave if they don't have that interaction with Klemm directly. It's not perfect but it's a suggestion to try to stem so much instability.

We would have less time to recover if that rule was in place and actually worked
(which it wouldn't). But I guarantee we would not want that rule in place if we got JP.

and one more thing...maybe now we will be FORCED to concentrate on Texas more. I love the players we get from Cali, but I think that pipeline is unsustainable without a Klemm-type local recruiter.

Truthfully only one coach was not recruiting Texas. So what does that tell you. And we will have a class that is about 90 percent Texas before it is all over with possibly.

Given a choice I would definitely prefer Jason Phillips. Knows the territory and has lots of connections.

GO PONIES!!!

those who follow recruiting closely have long been saying we need to concentrate more in our own back yard than relying on CA kids who could experience culture shock or homesickness and bolt

bottom line is we need quality players who like SMU for what Dallas and SMU has to offer.

I think the Line brothers are a great example of what we are looking for in out of the area players

Hulick talked SMU all the way but now appears only until that CA opportunity came. Not everyone wants to leave home
