We can wallow in guilt and recount all of the violations but we were doing nothing worse than anybody else in the SWC and from anecdotal reports from my friends who played at Arkansas, Houston, TCU and were on the staff at UT: Probably not as bad as those schools. Of course Houston and TCU were both penalized during this time period. Arkansas and Texas were too valuable to the NCAA to touch. The UT apologists on this board don't want to admit any of this, but go back and look at the record: UT players in the 70s were paid for working at a Capitol print shop. Problem? There was no print shop. Problem with the NCAA? Nope. All I need to know about the double standard that exists in college sports. BTW, I was an academic in the late 80s early 90s (partly at UT and I still live near campus). I saw unbelievable stuff going on that was given a wink and a nod. I also read a weekly newspaper circulated in academic circles that chronicled NCAA investigations. The major NCAA culprit during the 80s? Other than SMU, it was the Houston Baptist gymnastics team. The NCAA didnt have time to investigate the claims made against UT by SMU football players, but they had plenty of time to go after parallel bar cheating. The whole NCAA enforcement thing is a ridiculous joke.

and possibly allow some new degree programs being created for athletes?
i think that may be one of our main problems.
everybody says the "entrance requirements have been lowered"
but that means nothing if they cant pass the courses they are forced to take @ SMU
if we are on the same entrance requirement "playing field" as most schools now
but our guys have to take chemistry and the guys at TCU take PE degree courses
isnt that a huge advantage for schools like TCU and many others?

I finally faced the DP as I wrote my book. We had a death in our family...a loss. There are 7 stages of grief...

1. Denial...we got that.
2. Pain and guilt...we got that too.
3. Anger...I got that as I wrote my book.
4. Depression...I got that as numerous people told me I was wasting my time...nobody cared...it's been 25 years...move on...
5. Adjusting to the loss...we need to get here.
6. Reconstruction...numerous coaches and ADs have promised this...none have delivered.
7. Acceptance...we ain't here yet.

I went through all of this as I wrote my book. I have accepted what happened...but now I'm angry and looking for a fight. Read my book and see why.

So I'm going to try to pick a fight with the NCAA...then I will have peace...and a party.

I think this discussion is important for us to all move through the stages. Otherwise we will continue to wallow in stages 3 and 4.

Take a look at the UT undergrad catalog and the majors available to athletes. Demanding majors like "Exercise science." It is well known by anyone with open eyes that the UT players are directed to specific majors and classes with friendly professors who help them maintain the very minimum requirements. Once their playing days or over or St. Mack wants them off the team: They are dropped like hot potatoes. The graduation rate is disgraceful here (I live in Austin). And yet even some of our supposed fans are fanatical about the purity of the Longhorn program.

We were cheating just about every year from 1974 through 1986 except perhaps 1975. 1974 was payola stuff. players were paid for fumbles, interceptions big plays. When a school intentionally creates a slush fund funded by some of the top alumni of the university to pay players after even a single probation how can you claim that is not flipping the Bird at the NCAA. The truth? It wasn't just "recruiting stuff" It was a well organized slush fund that delivered hundreds of thousands of cash and illegal inducements and benfits. The truth can be clearly seen by the players admitting we had a W.O. Banston Dealership at Ownby. Pay attention to the Classes those kids were recruited in. The Bishops and the NCAA didn't catch half of the cheating going on over a decade because the key people including TRUSTEES and the CHEATING ALUMNI involved refused to cooperate with the Bishops Report or the NCAA. The NCAA barely scratched the surface of what happened over the prior decade after Meyer was hired

Stallion you are just wrong on some of this. Way off.Not sure where you are getting your figures. "Hundreds of thousands" ? Not even close my friend. I was there too. Yes there was money being exchanged but no where in the of ballpark hundreds of thousands. My goodness man. For instance. One of the "major violations" in the 1984 report leading up to the DP was Albert Reese'S rent payment. A one time payment of $500. Chump change compared to what is currently going on at top BCS schools.
