Call me mediocre, naieve, etc.. But I'd rather us go to lowly 6-win minimum bowl games for several years, than try to go right for the honey pot of national recognition. I just feel that if we can establish a "winning" record, that the recognition we'll get from that will really help our recruiting efforts, as well as the general population to remember SMU, and the sports programs.
The last thing I want is to turn into UH that seemingly hires two good coaches (Briles and Sumlin), but have that progress wiped out when lured away to a different Univ.
If JJ is that guy, great. If he's not, fine. I just can't help but think that lots of people are too impatient, and want their "golden egg" right now.

The only way we're going to get national recognition is if we win big (national rankings, 10+ win seasons, conference championships, wins over marquee opponents). Stringing together a run of mediocre bowls will do nothing for us (recruits won't care nor will the city of Dallas).

What the heck does that mean? You'd rather go to 6-win bowls for several years than go for national recognition? Why, so we can keep June around longer?
I would rather go 11-2 or something similar, and have to cough up more money to keep the coach, than to keep the guy going 6-6 every year still paying him 2million+ a year.

I prefer slow and steady progress, not leap frogged stardom.

You may prefer slow and steady progress but it certainly isn't going to gain us more fans or better recruits so what's the point?

Who's trying to go right for it? All any SMU fan that wants June gone has wanted is to see progress year to year.
1-11 in first year, 7-5 regular season (8-5 overall) in second year, 7-5 regular season (7-7 overall) in third year, 7-5 regular season (8-5 overall) in fourth year. Sorry but where is the "slow and steady progress" in three consecutive 7-5 regular seasons?
There isn't any, especially with the way this season has started (excluding last night's great result).

I'd like a national championship starting this year and for the next 143 years. And every Heisman Trophy.

I'll settle for a Conference Championship, but I can't imagine many conference champions have lost to Tulane recently.

Sorry PlanoStang, I'm not happy with .500 records 5 years into the June era (assuming we win more than we lose going forward, a big assumption). If you're cool with mediocrity, cool, I'm not.

skurtn: Slow and steady may win the race, but this race started in '89. Where/when is the finish line?

With conference realignment we cannot afford slow. We Have been left behind in 3 conferences with that kind of thinking.

incredible as it may seem, this team could still fiinish 10-4. I'd be REALLY pleased with a 9-5 finish because that would probably mean we went 1-1 in the CUSA championship game and bowl game
