But if he cannot recruit and then coach players such that they are capable of competing against better competition, and winning against equal or lesser competition, then what the heck are we paying $2.1 million for?

A hundred times this. Shockingly, he learned his lesson, and we had a great long drive to close out the game after the ridiculous pick 6. We were all within our rights to yell at him to run, or at least have a RB in the backfield. You can love the team, cheer for them to win and still have a valid gripe with the stunningly bad game management by the coach.

I took some people to the game who were very much on SMU's side. By the end of the game they had really enjoyed the football but found some of our fans to be obnoxious and ignorant. This has nothing to do with whether June deserves it or not (and I feel pretty sure he doesn't give tuppence for what someone in the stand has to say about what play he calls next), it has to do with the perception of our fans by others. That's all.

And, while I don't recall screaming obscenities until I met up with the UH band afterwards, I am not against obscenities at games (presence of children being the only issue). But I grew up supporting teams whose fans tried to lift the team, not fans who want to show everyone around them that they know best.

People on here think I'm a JJ supporter. And I am. As I was a Bennett supporter and a Cavan supporter when I arrived. I want the team to do well. I want the coach to succeed. I don't sit at a computer with a box kleenex fantasizing about proving someone myself right or someone else wrong.

Maybe you didn't mean it as such, but this is what bothers me. JJ didn't "learn his lesson" during the fourth quarter. Since he arrived at SMU he has tempered his approach to the game to meet the abilities of his team. He is never going to stop believing in his system and we hired him because of his system. We have had thousand yard backs for the last three years, and will probably have another this year. He has run the ball FAR more than he used to because the passing game is not where he wants it to be. When it is we will see JJ call a 60 yard TD on 3rd and inches. But fans on here are so hell bent on proving themselves right.

It is so easy to say that play calling is bad when it is unsuccessful, but it is a chicken-[deleted] fan that engages in much of that nonsense. History will never prove you right or wrong.

And perhaps it is ok for fans to yell "run the ball" at June, but I'd rather focus on the team trying to execute the play than the guy calling the play. They are who we should support.

Best fan moment of the game last Thursday was when I saw the signs being held up in the section next to me supporting the players.

I hope you pointed out that the thousands of other SMU fans there were not being obnoxious and ignorant. You unfortunately were situated close by some that were. Surely your friends are not going to paint all SMU fans with the brush created by one. That would not be fair to the rest of us.

Of course I did, and they recognized this fact. It was just interesting to get the perspective of people who don't know the infighting that goes on, and are watching a game like they would any other.

Did you not say build him a statue? If you want to get personal, I can dish that out as well because it's clear you're either a JJ homer or completely oblivious to our reality as a football program. Last time I checked, he's not gone, so he deserves all the crititism for being a head coach of this program. Also, last time I checked, we're 3-4. You have a loser mentality from the past 25 years that you cannot move beyond. Many of us have, and we expect more. He's not cutting it. I'm an alumnus of the school, and I donate money to the school,so i've expressed my concerns with the admin as I have a right to. It's clear we disagree, as I'm convinced JJ is not the right coach for us moving forward. Hopefully we have some people who have a vision of the future, and unlike you don't look in the rear view mirror to evaluate the status of our football program. As far as opinions, you should take yours to the recycle bin because your vision is as stale as month old bread stuck hanging off of JJ's lei.

If you hadn't noticed, even without a solid passing game that is "where he wants it to be," Jones has REPEATEDLY called long passing plays on 3rd and inches, rather than hand off to Zach Line, or call a quarterback sneak, or play action with a roll out. He did it multiple times against Houston. We failed to score against TCU from the 1 because 3 out of 4 plays were passes. We failed to score from the 1 and the 5 at Tulane. That is precisely what is so frustrating. I could chalk it up to trying to change it up and surprise the other team, but it is not at all surprising when he calls for a bomb on 3rd and short anymore.

2. I wasn't sure before now exactly who you were talking about, but now I think you're probably talking about one of our most nicest, commited, supportive, knowledgeable fans SMU has, who, except for a couple of weddings he was in, has attended pretty much every home game, and many away games, since he was a freshman in 1991. He stands, he cheers for the team, he's in his seat before kick off until the end. He is in no way interested in "proving himself right." He just wants to see the team that he attended win. With whatever coach will make that happen. (He also happens to be the godfather of my first daughter, but that is beside the point.) We would be much better off if we had 30,000 more "ignorant" "chicken-s*$#" fans like him, even if they are yelling, quite correctly when you have the ball in the 4th quarter up 17 against an offense that can score quickly and when your own quarterback has confidence problems and just threw a pick 6 to bring life to a team who was all but starting the bus, "run the ball."

Anyway, I guess my "ignorant" friend and I will be seeing you all at Homecoming on Saturday and at UCF next week then?
