Cougar King, I grew up in Houston and back in the days, UH was called "Cougar High" and possibly for good reasons at the time. As is the case with SMU, perceptions can be difficult to overcome. It's our challenge to constructively change those stereotypes.

We did encourage our oldest to check out UH in his search, but the overall feedback was rather negative - many decent programs, but poor campus environment in a high-crime community. SMU sent a pep band to UH for the pregame last year and required police escort due to the threats from the crowd. As opposed to the warm welcome that UH fans received on the SMU promenade.

The diversity question cracked me up. Our oldest chose CU for it's engineering program and was stunned at the lack of diversity. That fact and the drugs were 2 major reasons he transferred to SMU, in addition to the excellence of its programs. His current friends and classmates encompass many racial and ethnic groups and he is one of the few that has a car - a 5-year old Mazda3 - is this a luxury car?

Good luck in your college career. You will go far if you can overcome your own prejudices.

Thanks. The stereotypes really annoy me. Unless it's the Aggies - they've earned them, and maybe the annoying Boomer Sooners, and ... well, you get my drift. If Cougar King wants U of H to be perceived as top class, then he should strive to be a good Ambassador for his school rather than hurt the school's image further. I hope that he will.

You forgot Sand Aggies (Tech) and the Thumpers (Baylor).

Actually, the former schools that made up the SWC had a nice mix of mission and culture.
1) "Flagship" state school
2) "Flaghip" Ag School with great spirit (I almost went to A&M)
3) Rice - elite by any measure
4) SMU - the "church" school that isn't.
5) Baylor - the Flagship school of the Baptist world
6) TCU - Ft Worth's home team (I love Ft Worth)
7) Tech - a good school for people who didn't kill it in HS, but who need a shot.
8) HOU - a low cost way to get a good education.
9) ARK - the world needs ditch diggers - sorry, I couldn't help myself. I used to really love it when the Hog fans came to Dallas to play. They were my favorite group.

And your point is? Ill-informed comments about some pretty decent schools. It's a little insulting.

It's is called a joke. Good natured ribbing is part of the fun of college football. Aggies make jokes about UT fans and UT fans make Aggie jokes. As long as things remained good natured, I have no problems with our rivals taking shots at our school or taking shots at them.

You have never heard of Baylor people being called Bible Thumpers? Even Baylor people make jokes about it. My sister in law loves Baylor and loves making jokes about the Baylor experience.

I prefer to call them Bible Aggies.

Apparently the Big 12 teams have started calling WVU the Coal Aggies.

The biggest issues facing UH are

1) Being in Houston
2) Being in a glorified demilitarized zone in Houston
3) Being in Houston
4) Commuter school
5) Almost never will be a prospective student's top choice
6) Being in Houston

Oh. And its in Houston.
