Even if they were, I bet A&M, Mizzou, and maybe even Arkansas would fight tooth and nail to keep UT out.

The SEC has openly approached Duke. Take your pick of another ACC school.

The SEC with Texas & OU would be a monopoly.

A&M would adamantly and furiously oppose Texas in the SEC. Remember, all of those other schools (UGA, UF, South Carolina, UK) had a pact to not vote for the inclusion of a school from the same state as a current SEC member.
Guess we're out of luck too!

That flies in the face of the 1 school per state theory, unless you think Duke is the crown jewel, which they clearly are not.
In 2011 SMU's top 3 home games were against UTEP, UCF and Navy. We averaged 20,900 fans that season.
In 2011, Duke's top 3 home games were against Florida State, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. They averaged 24,400 fans that season.
SMU would be a better selection IMO.

Yeah, Duke really adds nothing for the SEC. I'd wager that there's already considerably more out-of-state SEC grads living in NC than Duke alums, but I could be wrong about that. NC State and UNC will be the SEC's targets.

I repeat: The SEC has openly approached Duke. This comes from a source inside the Vandy athletic department.
Keep in mind: it's the Presidents who decide conference membership, anc believe this or not, the SEC presidents are sick of being known as academic also-rans.
You want a national brand? Check.
You want a new TV market? Check.
The SEC doesn't need another mammoth southern state school - they have 13 out of 14. Bring in, say, a Duke and a UNC, or a Va Tech, and you lose nothing on the field and gain everywhere else. Christ, that's 10, if not 12 bowls a year, out of 16 schools.

I call BS, Vanderbilt doesn't have an athletic department.
Seriously though, I don't doubt that some within the Vandy admin are pushing for Duke, but I really doubt the entire conference as a whole wants Duke over, say, UNC or NC State. I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time.

Duke delivers some hoops credibility, but you've already got UF and UK to do that. Vandy wants another private to keep things sane. And Duke really sucks at football. If they were going to go after a private school, they'd go after the U and UF would block that probably. Duke was our model. Ken Pye came to SMU trying to emulate the Duke model in football and hoops. Two problems. The SWC was not ruled by hoops like the ACC. And he did not see that the conference mergers that were about to occur due to the OU Supreme Court case were going to be football centric.

If Vandy really wants another private to keep things sane, they need look no farther than SMU...plus the SEC would get another foot in the State of Texas.

Hey, we bring the Dallas market at least as much as Rutgers brings New York. I have lived here for quite some time and do not ever remember seeing Rutgers football on TV that wasn't ESPN. Nobody here that I know gives a hoot about Rutgers football. Or basketball. Or Rutgers. Not that NYC is a football town.

Ha! Good point - inside the Vanderbilt Office of Student Life.
The SEC has approched Duke, UNC and Virginia. I don't know who they get or offer out of those, but those are their targets.

A&M already brings the Dallas and Houston markets.

Duke also has a big east coast bias. Here in NC, some folk refer to the school as the university of new jersey, durham.
Go Ponies!
