I love Petrino but he does not recruit well. He does more with what he has than most but he would leave the cupboard bare when he left.

Poor recruiting gets exposed in the SEC a lot worse than the AAC and against mid-tier B12 teams. If we brought in Petrino with legit young recruiters with TX ties I think we'd be alright. But I think this is all hogwash because SMU would never hire him

It's highly lkely no matter who we hire that's gonna happen!

We need someone hungry who wants to win and make a name for themselves. I don't care if we lose a HC to a Big XII or SEC team in the future. We should want that to happen

Houston Nutt is one who would look out for number 1. He would come into this town and turn it upside down with energy and new, good recruits. He would be the best thing to happen to the SMU program since Ron Meyer. Now after about 2 or 3 years you would be tired of him, but he would get us where we needed to be at the next level with an energy you have not seen before unless you witnessed it first hand. He is exactly what most on this board have been clamoring for. And then he would be gone.

I think he was on the hopeful list when ARK fired him/let him go/Ol' Miss stole him.

I am skeptical only because of the last 2 years at Ol' MIss... Does JJ like him? Maybe JJ will "help" smu with HNutt hire.

if he increases our stars back to 3 years of 15 3-stars and a couple 4-stars then whomever replaces him will walk into a good situation

Nutt would leave a similar foundation of sand but with fewer wins.

You are wrong. Boise prospered after he left. Arkansas prospered after he left. Ole Miss is prospering after he left. His problem is ego, not recruiting and coaching.

His sub .500 SEC record would imply that coaching is a problem. Plus having watched a lot of his teams play over the years, inconsistency seems to be a hallmark of his. Even if these other programs "prospered" because of what Nutt left over, what does that say about him that other people are winning more than him with talent he recruited? I'll take the guy that has taken two different teams to BCS games.

I thought it was generally noted that when Nutt ran out of Ed Oregon's recruits he had a tough time. Especially when Snead graduated. Could not recruit a QB that fit his system too well. Even though his system was mostly run oriented.

I have always been a Petrino fan but we are too late. He does not need us as a stepping stone anymore. So I would be happy with the coach that recruited the players that Petrino used to do what he did.

I don't think Nutt recruited Ryan Mallett or Tyler Wilson.

He's not known as a great recruiter-a separate point-Arkansas has really fallen off in Texas which is where they need to be based on geography, the addition of A&M and the profile of the SEC

I don't know any names, but I think I would rather see us go after a OC or a DC from a major school who is looking to make a name for himself. Tired of the recycled coaches.
