I like Mason, I've met him a few times and he seems like a really good guy,
and at times his defense has looked pretty good, but I really doubt the decison makers
are going to go with him as June's replacement.

Like someone said earlier, we are at a crossroads, this decision will make or break SMU.
If we choose the wrong guy we could end up in the same conference as SFA & Sam Houston State.

I like Mason as a coach but not sure about him as HC. He could do well if told that he has to replace the entire staff and hire young, aggressive recruiters with Texas HS ties.
His D has played well but lacks talent and depth this year. Not sure if that is all his fault or not. He may have had restrictions that created this issue.

Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?

My dream list:
1. Kirby Smart (I've met him, has the same drive as Saban. Rick needs to use all of his Bama connections to reel this one in,plus a lot of $$$)
2. Chad Morris (He's up and coming, and he will be successful)
3. Phillip Montgomery (Baylor scores a bunch of points, would he leave Baylor?)

While Mason is a nice guy, I think we need new blood.

Well since he "picks" recruits for his defensive scheme, and we're in year six...

We don't know how many 'recruits he was allowed to 'pick'. I suspect jj keeps tight control on recruit selection and all offers.

Would love to see Kirby Smart or Chad Morris here but seriously doubt it we can pull that off.

How many of the P5s pull an assistant coach in to become their HC. Someone like Morris might need to establish his HC credentials first and in his case, he might like to get back to Texas, so it might be in the realm of possibility to get him...if the compensation is right too.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Sure why not? He would bring more credibility to the program than June Jones ever could. What he lied about ultimately wasn't that big of a deal.

He could probably be had for what June is making.

Look at it this way, June Jones base salary is currently even with

Jim Mora at UCLA
David Cutcliffe at Duke
Mike MacIntyre at Colorado
Kyle Whittingham at Utah
Mark Dantonio at Michigan State
Mark Stoops at Kentucky
Mark Helfrich at Oregon
Skip Holtz at La Tech (lol they messed up)

Dabo Swinney at Clemson only makes 100k more than June. Art Briles at Baylor is making just 300k more.

Not counting the AAC, June is making more than 14 head coaches in BCS conferences. Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern is only making $1.3m as are Jerry Kill at Minnesota, Scott Shafer at Syracuse, and Kevin Wilson at Indiana.

The others making less than June are Dave Doeren at NC State, Paul Chryst at Pitt, Tim Beckman at Illinois, Al Golden at Miami, Paul Rhoads at Iowa State, Randy Edsall at Maryland, Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss, Steve Addazio at Boston College, Mike Riley at Oregon State, Rich Rodriguez at Arizona, and Darrell Hazell at Purdue.

Personally I think the right move would be to offer Chad Morris a minimum of $2m per and give him a deal like what Petrino currently has where he has to pay a pretty penny to leave.

 Thanks for taking the time to look all that up...though I suspect you may have alread had that list put together. :) So I guess we should just scratch Morris off the list.

The attraction we might have for Morris is getting back to Texas. Doubt we have much chance with Smart. I wish we could get James Franklin but that is probably just a little beyond impossible.

Although Morris coached at Lake Travis he grew up only an hour from Dallas in Edgewood,Tx. Its not that bad of a drive, I make it about 6 saturdays a year during football season.
