"Did you hear? SMU's winning games again"
"Oh, I hear they are playing X power team and it should be a good game."
or
"Son, I want you on my team" - some coach who is recruiting (gasp)
"I'd be honored to join a program with winning tradition."
Trust me, I've played enough EA Sports NCAA Football Dynasty mode to know I'm right.

My point is that "Did you hear? SMU's winning games again" isn't going to happen unless the games we win are against teams that matter. We have to build for the market we're in, loading up on fake wins won't move the needle here especially if we're chickening out of games that matter.
Get a real HC and staff in here (this is part of that commitment we need) that's interested in beating the teams we need to beat (on the field and on the recruiting trail) to gain relevance. If the commitment isn't there then the new order of FBS football really isn't for us (and no amount of fake wins and shortcuts can hide that).

Going forward, we have an excellent opportunity to do this year in and year out with TCU and Baylor. Bear either team and people will be talking about SMU football. I think we have a good OOC schedule going forward (assuming A&M is off the 2014 sked)

Yes it is a good schedule and hopefully it remains good (provided that we can still get games with Texas P5 teams). Now we just need to fix the talent problem.

hopefully the next coach will think recruiting is important.

Also a coach who won't confuse OOC with "Pre-season".

Yeah, when I played Dynasty mode on the video game I was committed to the school more than JJ is to us in real life. I actually went after 3/4 stars.

I used to love NCAA Football on the last gen (RIP) of course it always got a little weird in the later seasons (one time in a SMU dynasty I played Rice for the NC).

In last year's edition I ended up with Ped State for like 3 years in a row even after trying to dump them to the Sun Belt. Had to put them in the same division of AAC and beat them to keep them out of the Conf. Championship to keep them out of BCS bowls.

The seven national championships I won in a row consisted of beating Georgia 3 times in a row, Notre Dame 3 times in a row and Houston sandwiched in between... I even left Houston in CUSA that year. What gives???
Also, the same stupid Georgia running back won the Heisman trophy 4 years in a row and my RB got second every time until that ahole finally went to the NFL

Oh NCAA....

NCAA Football: Where even SMU can be relevant.
