A trip to Omaha would be way cooler than anything lacrosse could ever bring to the table. End of story.

This is athletics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletics_(sport).
Yes, SMU athletics does not have a men's team and the women's team is weak.
We can easily make a team of women over 40 years old who can run faster times than the SMU women from probably 400 metres up, and definitely 800 metres up.

My current avatar demonstrates an athletics meeting of women racing 3000 metres.

They can lift less than the men.
Strong, like bull.

I really enjoy baseball, but don't underestimate the fun and excitement that surrounds lacrosse. Got to attend both men's national semi-final games this past spring and the atmosphere (along with both games) was amazing.

Lacrosse is awesome and is a better fit with where we are heading as a school (acc-type). Much more exciting than baseball which is basically watching paint dry. Also lacrosse kids are generally from better schools so we can do more with less scholarships. Most D-1 schools run a 35 man team with 12 full scholarships.

Are we really arguing over something that Rick Hart said about baseball and lacrosse on April 19?

Stallion wrote:I applaud the communication either way. Hart really isn't making all these decisions himself anyway. Quite frankly if you have money for a IPF (and a place to put it) and not a Swimming Pool you build the IPF. If swimming was a greater priority to the alumni then funding would be found. That's how things go at private schools. Don't hi-jack the football program to bribe some willing donor to first fund swimming when Football quite frankly is much more important to the athletic department
Stallion, I disagree. A new Natatorium and a IPF are not mutually exclusive. From Administration's perspective and the reality of our circumstances, separate sources for such gifts are likely and needed. After football and basketball, which are able to readily attract major donations for capital projects, e.g. Ford Stadium, Crum Basketball Center and now our newly renovated Moody, Swimming & Diving is probably third in potential funding capability. Our large number of alums and friends have been active in pursuing our needs for more than 10 years.

The barrier is the huge costs of a competitive facility ($15-20m) and the administration position that we need to cover this large investment by ourselves (or 90%), which appears impractical given our non-revenue circumstances. Also, our Women's Team does not have the tenure of the Men's Swimming & Diving program and is not likely to identify likely contributors for a facility desperately needed to support both Men's and Women's Division 1 requirements. The result? Our Co-ed Swimming teams will most likely fall to the bottom of the list every time, due the huge costs and unrealistic standard that non-revenue sport supporters need to achieve the unachievable, i.e. the fund raising skills of those committed to FB and BB.

Net: FB and a IPF need not fear competing with Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving and its long overdue, facility starved necessity.

Amen.

Baseball is growing in DFW because of the rangers. I'm not sure if it will ever replace the cowboys however if they win a world series it could get extremely big. Guess who will reap it froggie baseball cause there is no pony baseball.

Uh huh more exciting? You are kidding right.. Watching a bunch of frat kids with sticks running around is fun? I guess the golf channel has to be action packed for you then

Watching actual athletes running, with fast paced scoring and lots of contact, vs sleepy old man game where the thrill is filling out the score sheet and singing 50 year old songs after suffering through 7 innings? Easy choice. Golf channel is way closer to baseball than lacrosse.

That's why high school baseball coaches hate to see lacrosse show up at their schools. The seasons compete with each other and all the good athletes end up playing lacrosse since it is more fun.

That said, SMU isn't getting either one until we get more money coming in, and that probably isn't for awhile, even though lacrosse would help our admissions, since there are really good students who would come to SMU if we had division 1 lacrosse.

Great, now we're in a [deleted] match over which is "more exciting," when we're getting neither. Because different people clearly can't think different things are exciting without being insane.

The NBA blows, for example. I'd rather stare at the sun then watch the NBA. But it does feature "actual athletes running with fast paced scoring and lots of contact."
