And considering very seriously dropping football altogether. There would be no American Athletic Conference to play in, no Larry Brown, no Top 25 in bball.
And let's not forget that SMU has paid JJ nothing, so "our school" is not being robbed.
As frustrating as this year is, I'll take that. Thank you June.

Not sure about the AAC w/o June- and not sure Tulane would've gotten in without us- although they had a better case to make for AAC inclusion than we did pre-June.sbsmith wrote:We were getting in the AAC with or without June, he didn't do any more to get us in that conference than Bob Toledo did for Tulane. As for UTSA and NTSU both those teams finished with a better record than us this season and have coaches that combined make less than June does. At no point were we ever going to drop football. The basketball stuff has absolutely nothing to do with June, though I do find it interesting that LB has accomplished more than June in a 1/3 of the time.
Yes Larry has accomplished a lot more than June in 1/3 of the time, but basketball is considerably easier to turn around than football- all you need is a handful of guys to get it rolling, whereas you've got 22 starters in football. And Larry was a HOF NBA & NCAA coach before coming here- JJ didn't have that pedigree. Also easier to sell out a stadium, create a buzz, and recruit in basketball- and our conference affiliation certainly holds us back in football- basketball not so much. Also we have a $12M basketball practice facility- a $12M IPF could certainly help with our football efforts. Again, June's recruiting has been terrible recently even by AAC standards (9th of 10 in 2014), but comparing bball to football is apples to oranges.

You need more than a handful of players as we saw last year. Also, getting those high quality hoops players are harder than getting high football players. To get a top 5 football player you are competing against 120 D1A schools. To get a top 5 basketball player you are competing against over 300 schools plus their handler and entourage. You won't see any Daniel Gresham's just fall into our laps in basketball, you have to work hard for those recruits you get. So since you say it is apples and oranges you can't say hoops is easier than football.

Re: SMU offers 4-star CA QB
And on the average basketball coaches work much harder than football coaches in general. You see LB flying around the country weekly just to keep up with other schools. They don't just sit around watching tape and offering. They have to build relations all around the country with AAU coaches and handlers etc. One would have to be ignorant of the basketball recruiting process, be a complete idiot or have bought into the JJ propaganda to believe differently. June wouldn't last in basketball recruiting. As Hoopmanx said that the high level recruit don't care about practice facilities and other stuff we think matters. I think Tom Izzo was saying how much basketball coaches get run ragged as opposed to other sports.

As has been reiterated many times on here, judging offers as opposed to stars is a much better way to gauge a players ability and their prospects. If you take a 2* with 20 P5 offers and a 5* with 1 P5 offer, I'm inclined to pick the 2*

I am from Pleasanton and we used to play Foothill every year. They always have very talented QB's and run a solid system. He would be a great get. Their last great QB, Sean Mannion, we played on ESPN because our QB was headed to Stanford and Mannion was going to Oregon State. He has done pretty well up there. I wonder if they found him because of Spencer Hollie who is from about 5 minutes away in Dublin. Would be great to nab his teammate as well. A lot of East Bay QB's don't get offers as early as others. They are often middle of the pack and in the view of PAC 12 schools (because many don't run a spread or pro style) and Pac 12's take forever to offer. Would love to see a great East Bay player of the Hilltop!

It's not an accomplishment unless he commits; it's such a non-story until then.
1) It sounds like we weren't even on his radar until now
2) why would he commit to a school he hasn't even thought about when he learns June is a lame duck coach?

Non story when SMU offers early but worthy of significant criticism when SMU does not offer early. Got it.SMUer wrote:It's not an accomplishment unless he commits; it's such a non-story until then.

Re: SMU offers 4-star CA QB
It seems like it made a big impression on him to get an offer when he first spoke to them. Would it have been better to speak to him a number of times before offering? Sounds like that is what you are saying.malonish wrote:"I got an offer from SMU," explained Kearns. The June-must-die junta will criticize him no matter what.
I think he needs to go but this is not the thread to bash him in.

Oh now it makes more sense to me. He's from the Steve Clarkson's Prospect Camp. I think I remember a connection between Clarkson and June. In fact Clarkson brought his Dreammaker Camp to SMU's Ford Stadium in 2010. Friend of June Recruit. Meanwhile there is apparently no QB in Texas which June likes enough to offer despite the gaudy success of Texas QBs in recent years. Rinse and Repeat
