I think the last straw was trying to charge admission to the Rice Band. Dan Snyder wants his resume.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

All they had to do was keep Mac as the head coach and get the two best coordinators in football and a special teams guru to take care of the coaching side. I think SMart may do well.
He got the job because of his 'business sense.' That, and some suspected that his ties to the PAC 12 along with similar approaches to college athletics was going to help the 'horns get into that conference.
John Canzano of the Oregonian wrote a number of articles about his time with the Trailblazers. If he is to be believed, it was bad - real bad. Petty, clueless, and a complete failure. Ended the 'blazers streak of 20 years in the playoffs, drove the arena into bankruptcy, fired over 100 people, waged a petty, useless war against the media. Was GM of the Rockets and did okay. Also managed not to screw up his job as AD of Arizona State, which, along with him being an alumnus of the school, led to his hiring.
You summed up his role as AD pretty well: Count the money, keep the wins coming, placate the boosters. He may only achieve one of those, considering his hires.

Band thing was a non story but everything around Patterson was being spun negatively. All big 12 Texas teams are now charging for every seat. It was a gentleman's agreement that ended in the summer.
Re: Texas AD Patterson to be fired today
I have no idea how or why he got the job, but I do quite clearly remember that people who knew him from his time in Portland predicted he'd fail loudly and miserably. I remember this making the rounds back then:

That in and of itself probably made a lot of booster mad enough to fire him at a school like UT in the south. The new AD will probably fire both coaches at some point. Maybe Smart will get one year before they fire him but not much more.
You do know they just took down all the confederate monuments on the UT campus

Ha. The more I hear about Patterson, the more I like our guy.
Actually, we should be just as worried about Rick Hart as we are about listing Larry Brown or Chad Morris. Having a competent AD is evidently not as easy as it sounds and when you have a good one, you need to keep him.
I don't think it is a coincidence that for the first time since the DP, SMU has legitimate Basketball coach, AD and Football. Each hire was the foundation for the next.

This demonstrates you've got no idea about what's going on a Texas.

Actually I think getting rid of Jamil is the only thing Patterson did right. Everyone up there is sick of the guy and he and his cronies have been part of the problem. Now they can hire an actual AD who can get it done.
Probably not good news for us a few ways - a smart AD will figure out how to turn the LHN into a Big 12 network and it might actually be worth something, and then might help lead the big 12 into a better spot before we are ready.

Sure I remember the ramblings of an old man's thoughts on the hiring of Charlie Strong. I don't remember any other big time donors complaining about it though. I'd love to see proof of that if true. I don't know how familiar you are with Austin but it is one of the most progressive, liberal cities in the country. There's nothing "southern" about it.
I live here and will disagree with a couple of things you said. Red McCombs was not the only big cigar who grumbled about Strong's hire. I won't say that it was necessarily racism, but Strong was not a top choice of very many big donors. Patterson felt immune from their pressure because the program brings in so much revenue from tickets and tv that no single donor or clique is big enough to run things.
Secondly, yes, Austin is a very progressive and liberal city, but that doesn't mean that it is not Southern and it certainly doesn't mean that the people who actually run UT have any progressive leanings themselves. They are mostly Republican big wigs from outside Austin who, like the legislature, are contemptuous of the entire city.

Re: Texas AD Patterson to be fired today
Rumbling about a hire is not the same a racism. To think he was not ready for UT was not a crazy thought, and in no way projects any kind of racism.
Most people are contemptuous of the city of Austin's politics, but that just makes us wise. It has nothing to do with the question at hand.
