Thinking out loud here...we haven't had a HC transition to another HC position since Ron Meyer...sheesh that's a dry spell.
Glad for Chad and SMU...

Wouldn't it be best to look for an offense similar to Morris' since that is what we have recruited for. Or a tough defensive guy who hires an OC similar to Craddock/Morris. Les Miles?

It sounds like there are going to be a whole bunch of p5 coaches looking.

I think he's gone, especially if we get an upset win over UCF (or Navy or Memphis) unfortunately. Where he goes, who knows. Maybe Arkansas. Maybe Ole Miss. But he's most likely gone.
As for his replacement, we need a Chad Morris "clone". Young, high energy, can recruit Texas? High powered offense. Mike Yurcich? Jake Spavital?

Hayden Fry is only 88. SMU could make up for the 1972 mistake.
(Fry was a 32-year-old offensive coordinator at Arkansas when SMU approached him. He says he told them he had to be able to recruit African-Americans to accept that job, and was originally rebuffed.)

He might be an excellent choice and he might just stay here long term and be our Patterson.

All the talk at Clemson was that "he gone" but as I recall he waited for his daughter's graduation before taking the SMU job. Unless the A$M job is offered after this season, I'm going to remain hopeful we have Morris and this staff for at least one more year and that would give Coach Traylor another year to demonstrate that he might be a good candidate to replace Chad, assuming Traylor is even interested. He would also be in a position to assess the current staff (or at least any that Chad doesn't take with him) to see if anyone would be retained.
I agree with those who say it's depressing to even have this discussion right now, but it's the price of success in this business and it's a good thing that Chad has found success at SMU, something that has proven difficult to accomplish. At least he would be leaving with the program on an upswing, so finding a good successor and maintaining some momentum will be critical for the future of the program.
But his son is a sophomore. He is neck & neck with another top sophomore to start next year. Now seems like the right time to go or else wait for two years if he is the starter. Plenty of people wait one more year for their kid to graduate. I remember Doug Meacham did in Stillwater.

A random thought here but let's say we gave Chad $3.5 -$4MM to keep him here another 5 years and ACTUALLY broke ground on the IPF over the off season. With the path we are on now, taking the players that we have/ recruits committed could we really get this thing rolling in the next 1-5 years like all of us want it to?
