'Matters' is a relative things. The Belk Bowl and Va Tech don't matter in Texas.
Keep in mind, the whole marketing campaign this year has been about us owning Dallas and the surrounding area.
We started in North Dallas, moved out to FW, have expanded in Houston and other parts of Texas and Arkansas. Only miss was in Memphis, and that's okay. But there has been a theme, a narrative we've pushed, and it's a good one that we could use pushed a little farther.
It would help to play a relevant team in a Texas relevant bowl, and I would give up a slightly bigger bowl for one that plays into our needs.

Gundy makes more at Okie State than Chad did at Ark
Maybe Gundy wants the Chad "Ark Golden Parachute" to finish out his career?
$10 Million for sitting around is not a bad gig

This is a genuinely terrible take.
Playing a well known Power 5 school on New Year's Eve on ESPN would be a fantastic thing for the program.
The bottom line for a bowl is to get into one where we face a Power 5 team. Most of the AAC tie-ins are against other Group of 5 schools, and that would be disappointing after the season we've had.

Re: Week 11 bowl projections
Allow me to repeat myself:
WE WANT A P5 TEAM. That is a given, and absolutely nothing I've said changes that. Anything less than a P5 opponent after the year we're having is a disappointment and a failure by both our AD and our conference.
But, for the same reasons, we want a program and a bowl that helps to advance our agenda, and there are bowls and opponents who do that better than others. We should have more than one option when bowl selection time comes, even after the P5 matchups come up, and be smart about those options.

IF we can get to 10 wins...
Bowls want to drive up TV numbers, and the Texas vs Shane angle has too much going for it not to be an option for one of the bowls.
