More Pac-12 speculation

What I can't figure is that if the Pac-10 are in 30 day negotiations with ESPN / Fox, wouldn't they try to get there structure set before finalizing the media negotiations? None of the media outlets, nor blogs are mentioning this, so I am missing something.

Besides valuing each member school on its own (including USC & UCLA), I suspect there are more valuations of non-PAC schools than PAC schools.

At a minimum SD St, Boise St, Fresno St, UNLV, AF, Colorado State, SMU, Houston, Rice, BYU, probably Tulane, Hawaii and Memphis as well. Then combinations of these schools.

To your point, if the PAC conference does indeed expand, you would think there would be strong indications within the next 30-90 days???? I suspect that is why there is such buzz right now about expansion.

It isn't Fox versus ESPN. There are several content providers that are trying to get into the game. And each one of them have different goals and objectives. Identify their objectives that will maximize the size of the deal, then you invite people that best help you meet those goals.

Sports remains, probably through everybody's lifetime on this board, one of the few remaining advertising outlets. Couple that with the emotional connection to your respective sports team...it's powerful.

The media giants are well aware of this and we have to pray that perhaps our enormous media market helps inch us over the goal line with a new conference. Despite the fact we don't "deliver D/FW" and they are well aware of that as well. We deliver a helluva lot more than TCU and that's a fact as well.

I just looked at TCU's 2021 attendance figures. The SMU/TCU game at Amon Carter had a higher attendance than TCU/UT. That's shocking to me. In fact our game drew the biggest crowd of the year there.

Probably a Mountain West/PAC 12 hybrid. Figure Big XII will take Arizona schools, Colorado and Utah.

It leaves us looking at the ACC after Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina are poached by the SEC and Big 10. The question is how deep will the two superconferences dip for new members that add value? The Big10 is looking for AAU and that means Kansas and North Carolina. Possible Virginia but I don't see the Cavs adding a lot of viewers.

We'd certainly be part of that hybrid if there were a few eastern-ish schools joining like Memphis.

They are also considering Florida State, Miami and of course have long sought after Notre Dame. Big 10 could kill the PAC 12 and together with the SEC could destroy the ACC as well.

Even if this happens, we still have a path forward. What this essentially states is that the TV money also values the quantity of the content...they need the conferences to have more teams so more content is available. The B1G takes 4 PAC schools, B12 takes the 4 corner schools, and WSU/OSU would be forced to MWC. ACC is vulnerable, but protected because of their GOR...nobody is leaving for a decade; it's too expensive!! However, the ACC knows they have to expand and grow the brand to survive long-term as every other conference already came to that same conclusion. And, the ACC has the competitive advantage as they have the best time zone and population centers. So, the conference has a decade to get their sh*t together before they lose a couple teams to the SEC....go after Cincinnati, UCF, WVU, SMU, Memphis, and be aggressive. If Notre Dame wants to join, the ACC can kick a school out of the conference, but it cannot afford to wait in perpetuity like the B1G.

With all that said, I think the Pac-12 will remain a Power 5 conference a year from now. I also think the Pac-12 will invite SDSU and SMU (and maybe up to 4 more schools) into the conference towards the end of this year once there's clarity on media contracts. Too many moving pieces; I look forward to the football season starting and beating TCwho.

The biggest threat to the PAC12 is the BiG10, not the Big12. The latest report from CBS Sports suggests this threat is lessening.

"Now it appears the Big Ten is content to press pause on expansion for the time being, as its interest in those schools has "cooled," according to CBS Sports.

College football realignment update

After the anxiety caused last week regarding further Big Ten expansion, industry sources have indicated the Big Ten is no longer as interested in adding California, Oregon, Stanford and Washington. Rights holders were balking at paying the same amount for those schools as the 16 Big Ten schools going forward ($80 million-$100 million).

Instead, the Big Ten is taking its current holdings into the next media rights contract negotiations going into 2023.

The conference added USC and UCLA just in time, as including those two premier brands extended the Big Ten's media coverage into the vital Los Angeles market.

And will help increase the value of the league's next TV contract. Analysts predict the Big Ten could earn up to $1 billion per year on its next deal.

But just because the Big Ten doesn't want to add any more Pac-12 schools doesn't mean it's still not in hot pursuit of Notre Dame."
