A lucky win over a crappy Tulsa team is something to get excited about these days b/c none of us expected (or at least me) to win more than 2-4 games in conf play. There is an actual offense and they seem to play hard. We aren't deep and have to grind it out.
The last 5 minutes was painful to watch for both teams, just really poor play. Our offense completely stalled and seemed timid. We are grateful they couldn't hit any FT's - that is the way it goes.
Here's the thing, I don't love the way Doh treated the kids early in his tenure. Also, I've never been a fan of him as a bench coach. That said, when he's engaged, he's a phenomenal recruiter. He sold freakin Cannen Cunningham on an empty trophy case. That was the sales pitch. Brilliant!
Now, if he's treating the kids better and is more complimentary, that's for the good. Beyond that, for whatever reason, the style of play/system is very effective, and it's not completely installed. Also, and I pay close attention to this stuff, but it's hard to really point to games we've been out X & O'd the last few years. It's been en vogue to say Doh can't bench coach, but the reality is that we've dictated tempo on everyone for close to 2 years now. Someone give me actual examples of us doing the wrong thing w/regard to situation & strategy. People used to complain about his short leash policy, but that hasn't been the case for quite some time either. Obviously, we have no depth this year, so that's part of it.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones
