It would appear that we check all the boxes for the PAC except footprint. There aren't any P5 schools available for expansion at this point. Hopefully, they will choose expansion now which includes SMU. In hindsight, they should have expanded to SMU and Houston last year, but Conspiracy Theorists would have posited that such a move ran off USC and UCLA, which of course would not have been true.

I hate to defend BYU on anything, but I agree with taco on this

I think you might be unconsciously thinking of Boise state in regards to terrible academics, which is valid. BYU has to be better than wazzu and Oregon state academically

BYU is not terrible academically. Agree with crispy taco here. Oregon State also has some
very good programs in technical disciplines. The kinds of programs many SMU students shy
away from because they are difficult. Agree about BSU. Most Jcos are more rigorous.

People on this board need to do their homework or tone down the anti LDS sentiment.
The original post that singled out BYU as being terrible is ignorant and possibly self
serving.

BTW: the idea that SMU is great academically is an illusion. We are solid academically
but regressing. The US news national rankings are the standard whether Turner chooses to
ignore them or not.

The main knock on BYU by the PAC-12 was no games on Sundays. They admitted Utah which is full of LDS kids and probably as conservative as BYU. Academically, they are a good private school. One of my law partners went there.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

My apologies on the ranking. Way back when, they weren't as strong academically because they would admit lower tier students, but they have moved up the ladder significantly (a lot of friends from high school went to BYU). That number really surprised me! Again my apologies.

That said, the other statements about the official positions of the school absolutely holds true. It isn't just about the "not playing on Sundays".

Prepscholar supposedly has the composite SAT scores for various student bodies. BYU is at 1315. Well ahead of some other church privates like Baylor (1293) and TCU (1250). SMU is around 1390, ahead of UT Austin and A&M. If you ask around you will find kids at TCU and Baylor who couldn't get into SMU although we were their preferred school. Oregon State certainly has programs that no one at SMU would be interested in, but their composite is quite low at 1195.

It sure makes us feel good to know something like this. All those Baylor and TCU students who so wanted to come to a school with great academics and athletic programs, like SMU. Wanted a great school administration that supports athletic program. But just couldn't make it. Grieving.

Let's face it. Not many of our undergrads are enrolling at SMU because of its winning football tradition. That has been true for decades. They come here for all sorts of other reasons including the quality academics and social opportunities. Half of our kids aren't from Texas. They come from places where football is not as important as it is to Texas kids. Consequently we don't have as many alums in the 25-60 year old age range who are rabid sports fans. Fortunately there are enough of us who have the means to keep at least a little pressure on the administration to support Division 1 sports. I think that the administration should look at the applications for enrollment TCU and Baylor get after they appear in major bowl games. The more kids that apply the more good students from which to choose.

Reading that, it would be funny if the Big12 actually took SDSU before the Pac12 acted.

one has to wonder what is happening with their negotiations. First, it was going to be mid-Dec., then first of Jan. and now Jan. has passed and no results. Perhaps the P12 is not getting as much as they wanted or possibly some of the schools are refusing to sign a GOR. IMO delays not good for our chances of moving up. Guess time will tell.

Possibly the difference in the mindset between Cal/Stanford vs the Arizona schools. Or maybe the linear networks like Fox/ESPN vs the streaming ones like Amazon/Apple. A lot to work out, be patient. I think the longer it takes, the better our chances.

Back you 100%, there are some serious anti-religious folks who just have such an issue with religious folks existing and living their lives. Very sad to think some of them graduated from here.

It is more unfortunate that, at times, being a proponent of equal rights can be perceived as anti-religious. The same accusations were made during the civil war, the women's suffrage movement, as well as civil rights. God is great.
