There's a place at the northwest corner of Preston and Frankford called (I think) Sam's Burger house.
Check it out. Pretty tasty stuff.
While you're at it, there's also Scotty P's in Plano (Parker Road, I think). It's kind of like Joe Willy's. I think the Burger Boys would like it.

On the way to our place at PK, we often stop at Skinny's in Weatherford. Not local, but if you have a lake house out there, you oughta stop sometime. The BIG SKINNY: 3 cheeses, bacon, chili, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms and jalapenos - 5.99. If we leave within 5 minutes after the last bite, I can just make it to the bathroom at the casa.

That's kind of what I was thinking -- a mental picture some of us could do without ( ).
Although if you lose the mushrooms and jalapeños, it sounds tasty.

Whoever mentioned MyrtleBurgers at the Pike House...Wow, what a memory trip...Every Wednesday at lunchtime, as I recall, devouring that Myrtle goodness....soon to be followed by a trip to the executive stall, the one with the window that overlooked the big white cone (that had a DPS camera trained on it at all times).

As for the rest of youse...There was a time when I didn't think much of the Snuffer's burger, but now I'm hooked on it. Just make sure you ask for medium well so that they cook it. Something in the seasoning and the char on the patty. Like the chopped lettuce. It always falls off as you take a bite, but it adds to the presentation and crispness.

Mostly, it's the closest thing you can get to the Chili's Old Timer burger, which has since passed into chain restaurant oblivion. I miss the Old Timer. Chili's burgers now are just big, flavorless products of corporate marketing.

And speaking of which...Any list of the best burgers in Dallas that includes Fuddruckers is immediately suspect. Come on, talk about corporate, chain-restaurant food!

Jakes -- same thing as Keller's. Would rather go to Keller's for the coolness factor of the old-fashioned drive. Love watching the cars pull up to buy cases of beer...what would MADD think?

Goff's -- Yes, it's more accessible and you don't have to get harrassed by the butthole owner anymore...but I went to the new Hillcrest location and the burger just wasnt' that great. Several others I know who tried Goff's for the first time didn't get it, either. At one time Goff's was a great char-broiled burger with the cool touch of grated cheese, but on my last visit, eh...

Anyone else miss Kip's Big Boy at Mockingbird and Greenville? The Big Boy burger: double-meat, triple-bun burger with thousand island dressing -- what the Big Mac is supposed to look and taste like but falls horrifically short. Crinkly fries -the kind with ridges that you never see anymore. And top it with a hot fudge sundae - served in a metal sundae "glass" with whipped cream and shaved almonds on top and a sidecar of hot fudge in a metal tin that you poured on yourself. And a Big Boy comic book to boot!

Sorry, I've got to agree with the naysayers on this -- they make fantastic cheese fries, but their burgers are awful. Hell, their turkey burger is better than their real burger, and that's sacreligious to say.

Yeah, it is a chain, but as chain burgers go, Fuddrucker's is simply unmatched. Simply outstanding, every time I've been. I'd rank them even higher than the Burger Guys did.

I confess I never had one. Do they still exist anywhere? Or is Kip's a thing of the past?

Braum's has the fries w/ ridges.

BTW, my travels this weekend take me back to north & east Texas. The drive from Dallas to Tyler takes me by the Dairy Palace in Canton. A very good burger indeed.

Has anybody been to Char Bar on lower Greenville in forever? I used to go in college occassionally, but I invariably had the munchies when I went, so I'm not a good judge of their burgers or any other part of their menu.

I remember hearing about it, but I don't recall if I ever ate there. Then again, there were a lot of things I don't remember from those years.

Kip's also had another location close to SMU at Hillcrest & Northwest Highway (Loop 12). It was practically right in my backyard! The same building has been used for several years as E-Z's Burgers & Pizzas. It recently went out-of-business because the land is owned by the Southland Corporation (7-11) and they're going to build a convenience store there. Yes, there's a 7-11 at Hillcrest & NW Hwy but that will close when the new store opens. There will no longer be an E-Z's anywhere in Dallas. It's primarily a San Antonio operation.

I've eaten at Goff's several times since the change in ownership and move to Hillcrest. You cant beat Tuesday nights- 1/2 priced burgers. That's a damn good burger for $2.50....but if you go, plan on a long wait as it is very crowded on Tuesday nights.

It would be cool if 7-11 would use a little imagination and put their store in the original Kip's building and use the landmark sign. This is probably asking too much for the Dallas "level-it-now" mentality. I think Bob's Big Boy is still around (California)... how 'bout Shoney's (Oklahoma)? A Big Boy Hamburger was a real treat in a time when going out-to-eat was something special. A silver goblet hot fudge sundae was for straight As or a homerun or a birthday. Later on, used to take a date to the Kip's on Lemmon after a show at the Esquire. Of course, there was Jamie's on Lemmon... bowl of beans came first... terrific burgers!

Those were the days my friend...we thought they'd never end...

They just opened a Kincaid's in Southlake. Their really, really good burgers are at least a little closer to Dallas. A few years back, they were voted best burger int he country by some folks that rate such things, BTW.

Sure wish I still had 'mint' copies of the Big Boy comics that were giveaways at the restaurants! They're worth MAJOR bucks now. Ah, yes...Big Boy, Dolly (his girlfriend) & Nugget (his dog).

FYI: Recently saw one of the Big Boy statues for sale at an antique store on lower Westheimer in Houston. Heard there's a guy who lives in Houston who has his house decorated in Big Boy-style, complete with a statue, menus on his dining room table and checkerboard sheets on his bed! Now that's obsessive.
