Yes, you are correct, my son signs to become a mustang on Wednesday. He knows the win/lose record and yes has met the coaches and been to visit several times unofficially and once officially. He received his first scholarship offer in May of 2004 from Colorado - very tempting I might say. Then in August he received his second from Syracuse......a little to cold for a born and raised Texan. Then in October he received his offer from SMU followed by a offer from Louisianna Tech. And in November he received an offer from UTEP.
He attended several camps this summer: TCU, SMU, Baylor, A&M and Houston. Once the camps were over he told us that if he had a choice between any of the places he attended camp it would be SMU, he really enjoyed the facilities and the coaches. During the call period and up until he stated that he was "committed" to SMU, he was receiving calls weekly from OL coaches, recruit coaches and head coaches from: Louisianna Tech, Army-Westpoint, Colorado, LSU and Kansas State. Several coaches made it a point to let him know what game they would be at to watch him. Many colleges seemed to have him on their radar and then SMU offered......that was where he wanted to go, he said he knew deep inside it was the place for him. "Why????" everyone who knew him asked. "Why, when you have Colorado and UTEP offering, Army and LSU calling, why would you committ to SMU, Don't you know their losing....you may not see a bowl game for 2-3 years, if then???? WHY???". His answer was..........."I have 5 things I am looking for in a school and they come in this order....1) Academics; 2) Small classes - I don't want to be 1 in 500 in a class; 3) A school with a good Law School option; 4) location to home and 5) Football." He would tell everyone..."Yes, I know SMU is not a bowl team now, but I can go there and try to help make a difference and put my name on that trophy when we do. What's the challenge in going to a program that is already at the top. I wanna help SMU get to the top. I want to be one of the ones to make the difference." So there you have it...........
Here are the answers RIVALS never ranks:
Heart, desire, commitment. These recruits have bought into the concept of coming here to be a part of a new winning tradition; to, as he said: ... put my name on that trophy when we do.
Couldn't hope for any better...
