Maybe the following has been answered but I missed it.

Four thousand is what percent of living alums? I'm not sure there are any really good comparable schools but how does SMU compare with say Baylor, Rice, Tulane, TCU or Wake?

I agree with the no comparable schools. Probably be better to compare to schools that lost an entire generation due to the death penalty and terrible mismanagement afterwards if that could be done.

I donated to the Mustang Club last week. I plan on doing it annually but I'm not really sure how this works. I have zero ties with SMU so I'm a newbie at this.

Someone told me once that if a member of your family goes missing, forget about notifying the police or the FB I. Just call their school's alumni association, and they'll have that person's new address for you already.
