I went to an alumni event at (I believe) Heartland Brewery in Union Square a couple years ago. You meet a bunch of nice people you don't know, and it's fine. But when I get nervous with strange SMU people, all I can think to talk about is SMU sports, and I can't tell you how many conversations I put an end to by talking about Phil Bennett this, Tubbs that. They're not just disinterested; it actually horrifies them. It's like they're offended that you brought up SMU sports. It's a real eye opener. Everyone in the NY area should try it.

Yeah, I figured it was a real uncomfortable event. I would probably drink a lot of beer and then start talking about the Mets. With babysitters and the Metro North beatdown, I will stay here in the Constitution state.

When I was working/living in NYC (two years ago), I would sometimes go to Park Avenue Country Club to watch games (NFL, MLB playoffs, NBA). Nice place - more of an upscale vibe.
Its at 381 Park Ave. South in Manhattan (Park Ave. and 27th).
