Joe Alvazondo (sp?) is out of football after the Norv Turner an the Raiders staff were let go. He's filling his time running his night club and talking football with Dale Hansen on Sunday nights.

The guy I like is David Gibbs. I think he is still the defensive coordinator at Auburn. He replaced Gene Chizik.

David is about 39. He was the defensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota in Glen Mason's first few years and recruited Texas for the Gophers. After he left, Minnesota's defense hasn't been the same.

The word in MPLS was when Mason's name was tossed around for the LSU and Michigan State jobs, Gibbs was likely his successor. That never happened.

David went to be an assistant with the Denver Broncos and worked with his Dad, Alex Gibbs. Alex is credited for building those great OLs before he retired.

David has a great name, heritage, recruiting ties to Texas and would be someone who could inspire while challenging his players. A Stoops-like model maybe, but I've always been impressed.

Probably won't happen because he will want a lower-rung BCS job.

Nobody WANTS a lower rung BCS job, but they will all take it before they take a non-BCS position. :roll:

Joe Avezzano? You've got to be kidding. That would be like hiring the Phil Bennett of 20 years ago. If memory serves me correct, he won like 6 games in 5 years at Oregon St, with at least 1 of those seasons being a winless season. No thanks. Been there...done that.

Every time I hear or see Todd Dodge suggested as the next HC one other name comes to mind: GERRY FAUST. Remember him?

Faust was HC at Moeller High School in Cincinnati (1963-80). His remarkable 174-17-2 record was highlighted by seven unbeaten seasons, four national prep titles, and five Ohio state titles in his last six seasons. In 1981 Faust was rewarded with the HC job at the most storied college football program, Notre Dame. In five seasons he went 30-26-1 (.535).

The moral of the story: high school ain't college!

Bob Toledo. Was a HC at UCLA and won 22 games in a row there. Got fired after a few 6-5 seasons and some disipline problems with players. Knows Texas well, at one point he was offered the HC job at Oklahoma (before Stoops) and a few NFL jobs but decided to stay at UCLA. 6 years ago he was the hottest college football coach in the county

...and his newly implemented offense at New Mexico lit up the scoreboard for 6 points versus D2 Portland State in a 17-6 Lobo loss. No thanks!

Mariucci sounds good...he did well at Cal, and now that he went to the Lions he won't have the temptation of the NFL calling any more.

Mike Zimmer's contract is up this year, but there's the whole d-coordinator thing again. Perhaps he could hire Flanigan.

I still like the Terry Bowden idea too.

How about N. Texas' coach? He has done a good job at N. Texas without nearly the budget SMU has. Anyone other than what we have now will suffice for me. Hell, I would not oppose letting a different fan each week coach the team for the rest of the season. I bet they could coach the team to more than 1 touchdown in two games.
