Ha! I was there for that one as well. We went up 14-0 and I was all a-tingle then big Leaks ran all over our [deleted]. I felt lower than whale dookey afterward.

SMU led by Dandy Don Meredith against heavily favored Notre Dame in 1958. We played them tough but lost.

That was the game where, in the second quarter, SMU held UT on a 4th and goal, and just as the play finished, a Mustang Band freshman ran over and fired the UT cannon. The UT fans thought they had scored a TD, but became confused because the cannon was fired when they didn't score.

But remember, never believe any Mustang Band freshman stories.

I was there too. 14 - 0 at the half, and I figured we had it in the bag.

DMN headline the next day: SMU Springs Leaks, 42 - 14.

He actually fell just short of the record. He had a long run of around 70 yards late in the game that had the field been 5 yards longer he would have broken the record. That is the only good thing that happened that day.

Leaks fumbled 3 times in the First Half. Too bad they didn't take him out of the game

I don't remember the first game but do recall one week-end every October late 60's / early 70's we loaded up the church bus and enjoyed "MYF Day" at the state fair topped off by watching SMU play in the Cotton Bowl. I seem to recall games against Miami and Virginia Tech. Jerry Levias was my favorite player....

Yup, we did that too from First Methodist in Longview.

Remember a great 35 - 14 victory over N. Carolina St. in 68. Then a 30 -
22 (I think) defeat to Air Force in a nationally broadcast game to start
the 69 season. Chunkin Chuck & Co. were driving and on the Air Force
30 yard line with a chance to tie the game when time ran out.

I remember Sports Illustrated called Chuck Hixon and the SMU Mustangs the "aerial circus"

I was there, too, Plano.

We came from Rose Hill Baptist in Texarkana. What a great game under cloudy, cool skies.

1979 home opener vs. Rice.

Russ Potts and "Mustang Mania" brought 49,000 to Texas Stadium for the game.
