Odum is working very hard in FL and has already pulled in Elston Lane & has serious interest from other nice prospects like Devante Robinson, Adrian Burton and Lucas Thompson.
It's not consistent from all coaches and is not a cohesive coach team effort is the point .....some don't feel like they have to recruit. Its stems back from the Hawaii days...

GiddyUp wrote:Fair ranking? We basically have 3 recruiters that really hit the trail?
1. Adrian Klemm - Offensive Line Coach/Recruiting Coordinator (CA, TX, USA)
2. Jeff Reinebold - Wide Receivers Coach (Texas)
3. Derrick Odum - Secondary Coach (decent so far) - (Florida)
4. Bert Hill - Defensive Line Coach (some recruiting, Tx)
5. Tom Mason - Defensive Coordinator (closer, brought in at the end?)
6. Joe Haering - Linebackers Coach - any recruiting at all? (??)
7. Dan Morrison - Assistant Head Coach/Offense (?? - QB evaluator)
8. Wes Suan - Running Backs Coach (?? - any recruits)
9. Frank Gansz, Jr. - Special Teams Coach (TBD) - territory??
Good breakdown.
Bert Hill recruits SAn Antonio/Austina dn S Texas. Prolly spends most time in ATX and SA.
Rein bold covers Louisiana as well as East TX and Houston
Mason is brought in to close I believe.
Definitely aren't getting anything out of Haering (but I don't expect much).
I would like to see much more from Suan and ultimately Gansz who after all just got here.

Who is your source for the comment that some feel they do not have to recruit? Another coach? Conversation with the coaches that supposedly feel that way?
When I hear statements like that I wonder about the motivation of the person/people who told you that information so it is nice to have some sense of where it came from.
Note, not asking for you to name your source(s), just hoping to get some idea of their position.

Not on a public board, but there is some noise/discord about recruiting efforts. The fact that there are others commenting on it here on PF and the paid sites will tell you that there is something afoot and not just uneducated whining.
Its good that we discuss this and have pressure added, just as the issue about SMU acceptance standards and President Turner that got resolved with assistance from all on SMU boards.

ponyboy wrote:There are two simultaneous issues being discussed.
1) How well we're doing in recruiting; and
2) Perceived overreliance on one recruiter.
I was addresssing the first question.
I think the above statement is accurate. There are two separate issues that are being discussed and confused. Sure, they are related - but they still are separate arguments.
The biggest potential problem is the inconsistent recruiting effort from the staff. If Klemm were to walk away, there would be enormous problems in our recruiting. Conversely, if any other one of our assistant coaches were to walk away, it would not pose nearly as much of a problem.
The fact that some players who are perceived to be lesser regarded athletes are being offered is less problematic. It seems that most of these offers are to players in TX. I think this demonstrates the difficulties we have in TX with the reputation of our football program in a variety of areas. While we are still building our program, it may be easier to recruit top-tier players out of state who have fewer preconceived notions about SMU football. I think it is a reasonable approach to offer lower profile players in Texas in the hopes of creating better relationship down the road with high schools in Texas which will ultimately lead to more sought after Texas recruits.

Do you understand how it is difficult to trust your information when you are not even willing to say whether you heard it from one coach, multiple coaches, or just inferred it from what you have read online?
And no, reading it multiple places from multiple people (all of whom are vague about their sources or whether they even have sources) does not tell me it is not just uneducated whining. These boards can create an echo chamber effect where something said on one board is repeated on another until "everyone" is commenting about it with most of them not having first hand knowledge.
Alternatively, and it seems perhaps more likely, all of those people could have the same source who may or may not have some sort of agenda. I am not saying there are not issues, it is just nice to understand the motivations of the sources.
This is why newspaper reporters say "a source inside the White House" as opposed to "an anonymous source" or "i can't tell you where i heard this or even if i am just guessing". It allows the reader to evaluate the potential motivation behind the quote to some degree without giving away the confidentiality of the source.

Some people feel a sense of power in finding (or even making up) faults. Ok, but the shame is it materially hurts the very efforts you're supposedly trying to help, i.e. getting the best possible players in here.
You think you've found a real problem? Then become "suck buddies" with someone in power and work with them to get it changed. Don't publicly air the grievance and negatively impact what you're trying to fix.
Or, you could just [deleted] and moan and grandstand from the sidelines, thereby bringing continual attention to just how much damned smarter you are than everyone else.

Yes you've always had the same kiss-[deleted] attitude defending stupid SMU policies for decades when everyone with any sense knew you that changes had to be made to achieve success. Congratulations for being such a clue-less Cheerleader

I beg to differ...the difficulty in offering 4-Star Texas players is simply that some coaches are lazy, and don't want to engage in the fight. I have heard all the excuses, but we have offered only one 4-Star Texas recruit, and that relationship and offer has come from the same coach that has made the all the offers to the 4-Star California recruits. I call BS on the rest of the position coaches and challenge them to get in the fight, not wait until Saturdays to get with it--get off Tweeter and get with the process.

As I keep asking, please provide some evidence for you assertion that some of the assistant coaches are lazy. How do you know they are not doing exactly what they are told? If they are not doing what they are told, why are they still here?

Are you saying that assistant coaches are not doing what June has told them to do and he is not doing anything about it because he is loyal to them?
