Two Big 12 school sources confirmed that Louisville is back in the mix. And the sources confirmed a New York Times report this morning that Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) had lobbied Oklahoma president David Boren, a former Senate colleague. McConnell grew up in the Louisville area and has an undergraduate degree from Louisville.

The abrupt turn of events raised the ire of West Virginia's two Democratic senators.

Sen. Joe Manchin , a former governor who pushed for the hiring of former West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart, issued a statement.

"If these outrageous reports have any merit -- and especially if a United States Senator has done anything inappropriate or unethical to interfere with a decision that the Big 12 had already made -- then I believe that there should be an investigation in the U.S. Senate, and I will fight to get the truth," Manchin said in a statement. "West Virginians and the American people deserve to know exactly what is going on and whether politics is interfering with our college sports."

Sen. Jay Rockefeller also released a statement wondering about the process.

"The Big 12 picked WVU on the strength of its program - period," Rockefeller said. "Now the media reports that political games may upend that. That's just flat wrong. I am doing and will do whatever it takes to get us back to the merits."

Big 12 schools, who expected to add West Virginia, were caught off guard.

fair point. and yes, you've been getting a bad rap on here lately. Some people just have a low tolerance for opinions that differ from their own or the mainstream. But i will remind you that you were bold enough to call the possibility of TCU going to the Big East 'idiotic' to even suggest around a year ago. Not only did that happen, now we are the ones going.

Conference realignment is bubbling up again. You liked the addition of TCU to the Big 12. What about the possibility of West Virginia?

Well, I've got to be convinced on West Virginia. I haven't seen anything on the school. But TCU was easy. That was like coming home.

What are your concerns about West Virginia?

Morgantown … as I remember, you've got to fly into Pittsburgh and then drive a couple hours. That's pretty isolated.

You've always favored the Big 12. If it survives, does it matter what form it's in?

To me, you go out here to West Virginia, you're going to go a long way. I didn't like the Pac-10 for that reason. I feel like in the Pac-10, you're going to end up in an east division and end up playing the schools you played before. So why not just hold the Big 12 together? I still believe we can save the Big 12, but I say that Texas is going to have to look like the rest of us in the Big 12 instead of looking like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I don't like that. As long as there's a difference between what Texas has and what the rest of us have, it's going to be a problem every year until you finally go to an equal conference.
