It's a lot quicker than saying "I sure hope Southern Mehodist University is victorious over the United States Naval Academy in this week's football matchup."
The second sounds mighty white of you.
Ha! That does sound like something that Eddie Murphy would have said in his "white guy" sketch from old school SNL.
Referring to athletics Southern Methodist University requests the school be mentioned as SMU, not Southern Methodist.
-SMU Athletics Licensing Page
Personally, I don't think it matters. I believe most people that are familiar with College Football know that SMU is Southern Methodist. Similarly, when some one says USC, most people think Southern California, not South Carolina. We are the only "SMU" in NCAA D1 FBS. I don't think we're at risk to Saint Mary's University or Singapore Management University.
For the lazy flock:
Official University Name The name of the institution is Southern Methodist University. When referencing the athletic department, please always use SMU (e.g. SMU Athletic Department) instead of Southern Methodist.
Sounds reasonable to me, if only the sports writers and networks like ESPN knew that. ESPN more often refers to our athletic department as Southern Methodist.

We do need a better marketing department though. There are a lot of uninformed people out there about universities, except for what they hear in the media all the time. In terms of location, a lot of people don't know where Rice is either, so that doesn't bother me. We can't be everything to everyone but we must attract the right types of candidates and grab more media attention.
SMU is NOT a non-denominational school. It is owned by the South Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. That is why there is a board of trustees with members of the clergy from the UMC on the board.
That is why the liberal faction of the UMC tried to get the Bush Library off campus by going to the North Texas Conference of the UMC and then the Jursidicitonal conference because The United Methodist Church owns the school.

And, that is why I, John Wesley had to visit the leaders of the UMC and make them an offer they couldn't refuse. Why do you think Peruna VIII is retiring. Ah, the dirt nap in the Bishop's bed. So satisfying my Pisanos.
Ponyfans.. Basic stuff here, if you area trying to change someone else's mind you have to do more than agree on what you want them to think and say. I suggest you:
1. Purchase or have made Coffee cups/or other item with your logo on it. 2. Start a link and compile a list of Sports Networks, Media and Print types who do the shows and send them all individually a cup. Also, whenever you hear someone misrepresenting your brand and you send them a Cup and a nice letter with your request. You might even get a little toast on National TV.
Make sure you put the logo on both sides of the cup.....

Nice little project for some of you guys.
Not bad but you know when you address it to that person it goes through certain levels of personnel before getting to them. If we actually had SMU mail it with their stamp then it would most likely make it to them, since it would show official business. Radio and newspapers probably wouldnt run into much trouble if anything you would definitely get mentioned. Heck mail them tickets to the game, then if they dont want them, they can give them away on their radio and at least people would know a game was happening.
I recall that all my job interviews and intelligent conversations with people about colleges, they ALL hear of SMU and Southern Methodist University. If you're applying for a job at Burger King, or in some hillbilly location, maybe they don't know. But when you are in a situation speaking to someone of intelligent and authority they have heard of SMU and Southern Methodist. Let's show some self esteem. I've even landed a wonderful job and career because the interviewer was impressed I graduated from SMU. The interviewer was from Ohio stationed in NYC
Only today in NJ I saw a guy with a Wisconsin T-shirt and I asked if he was a badger. He said his wife was, I told him I was a Mustang and he said SMU. This is in NJ people.
Whenever I speak to anyone over 45 they all know what I'm talking about when I say SMU. And people who follow current college football (any age, but especially younger folks which is encouraging). The people who don't know are people who are in their early 30s-40s when we sucked (you know, like my age).
Just WIN, baby! And you can brand yourself whatever you want.
Definitely SMU over Southern Methodist. I really hate how ESPN refers to us as Southern Methodist in boxscores and schedules. It sounds more like a person than a university.

And bring back the blue jerseys!!
You and your blue jerseys, you know during games when we scream Red.... Blue, I scream red louder than blue because red jerseys are better than blue.
